At first we assumed it was Scientology. After all, who else has the money to produce and purchase space for such glossy anti-pharmaceutical ads, which have been popping up all over transit shelters and buses in Ontario and Montreal? Google wasn't much help, and their Blog Search just pointed us to other people as perplexed as we were. And poor spellers with domination fantasies. Searches of domain registrations weren't particularly fruitful, especially after the......

Regardless of how you choose to celebrate (or not) the upcoming holiday season, it’s hard not to embrace a spirit of generosity that seems unique to this time of year. Students from the Ontario College of Art & Design’s Think Tank program are hoping that giving mood will be alive and well among restaurant patrons on Thursday, December 6, as they unveil the inaugural Bread Project. A joint project between OCAD’s Think Tank and......

Photo by David Topping. A mysterious bag discovered in an alleyway beside the Royal Ontario Museum at about 7:00 p.m. tonight has shut down all traffic––pedestrian and vehicular––on Bloor between St. George and University and on Queen's Park southbound from Bloor and Harbord. UPDATE (10:45 p.m.): CTV is now saying that police have found "what appears to be a pipe bomb," and that the building was (half-)evacuated (contrary to what we were originally told).......

Our most anticipated part of the Toronto International Film Festival’s new Future Projections programme, the Into the Pixel exhibition, had its opening reception last night at the at the Ontario College of Art & Design's Great Hall, where it will remain until the end of the festival. The exhibition is worth seeing, and many of the large canvases are striking when observed in the flesh. And while, yes, an exhibition of paintings is an......

Another spate of announcements from the Toronto International Film Festival, with in particular an entirely new programme announced, Future Projections. To feature installations, interactive film projects, and other film-related art work presented outside the cinema space and throughout the City of Toronto, it’s to work as a companion to the Wavelengths programme. Eight of the nine multimedia installations will be offered as free, non-ticketed events, with entry to the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery......

Often, ideas are continually improved through the feedback of others. Other times, an idea is at its best when first conceived, and can only be diluted from there. That's part of what Amy Leaman and Ryan Planche wanted to explore by creating Shift:Positions, the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) Student Press' inaugural book, which launches tonight at the Gladstone Hotel. The book contains fourteen essays written by OCAD industrial and environmental design grads......

Three years ago, Frank Warren printed 3000 postcards inviting people to share a secret with him. Long since he stopped handing these first postcards out at subway stations and art galleries, he continues to receive secrets from around the world. Each week, Warren posts some of these on PostSecret, the largest advertisement-free blog on the internet. He has also published three books compiling some of these secrets: PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives, My Secret......

Today marks the opening of the Ontario College of Art and Design’s Professional Gallery and sparks the art college’s new residency program with international art star and OCAD alumnus, Rirkrit Tiravanija. The son of Thai diplomats, now based equally in New York, Berlin, and Bangkok, Tiravanija epitomizes the “Nomadic Resident” the series aims to represent. Tiravanija’s unique and experimental practice has most famously involved cooking and serving Pad Thai in the gallery, but has also......

You know, you get on in years and you start to think that everything has been done. Nothing can ever be new again. So jaded and hard to impress. Then suddenly, it dawned on us that not everyone thinks this way and if they did, their livelihoods would just fall to the wayside and hey, doling out french fries over a greasy counter doesn't sound so bad afterall. Those who most definitely do not......

As part of Toronto’s Live With Culture initiative, an all-night party to celebrate contemporary art is scheduled to start this year on September 30 at 7:00pm and end on October 1 at 7:00am. The event is called the Scotiabank Nuit Blanche and is modeled after an annual Parisian festival that began in October of 2002 and has already spread to other cities such as Brussels, Rome, and Madrid. Private and public buildings will be......

Hidden in the Village by the Grange food court, just across from gallery goers (AGO) and gallery makers (OCAD), lies Helena’s Magic Kitchen.  Helena’s offers Eastern European traditional dishes such as perogies (6/$3), goulash, and cabbage rolls, in addition to other fresh goodies including daily soups, quiches, crepes ($5), frittatas ($4) and more.  This secret spot of OCAD students is a fave with Torontoist too, especially with its veggie friendly appeal – choose from lentil......
