COMEDY: Having just been nominated for four Canadian Comedy Awards, Monkey Toast: The Improvised Talk Show is still going strong after several years as one of Toronto's foremost comedy shows. The premise is simple: the host, David Shore, interviews a few local celebrities (past guests include Mayor David Miller, writer/actor Don McKellar, and musician Peaches), and then a team of improvisers create skits based on the interviews. Tonight, musician Big Rude Jake, Susan Fischer character Evelyn Reese, NDP leader Jack Layton, and MP Olivia Chow will sit down with Shore. The Gladstone Hotel Ballroom (1214 Queen Street West), 8 p.m. (doors at 7:30 p.m.), pay-what-you-can.

THEATRE: We would be remiss if we did not mention the Fringe's Next Stage Theatre Festival, as previewed in this past week's inaugural Drama Club. The festival is a showcase of the eight top Fringe companies, with performances every night until January 18. The Fringe is also offering an evening double-bill of only $25 at the door ($5 off). On stage tonight are Take It Back and The Rake’s Progress: Do You Know Where Tom Rakewell Is? at the Factory Theatre Main Space and First Hand Woman and Don’t Look at the Factory Studio. There is free entertainment in the heated McAuslan Beer Tent throughout the festival. Factory Theatre (125 Bathurst Street), 7:15 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. (Factory Studio); 7:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. (Main Space), $15 per play.

COMEDY: David Shore and a full cast of guest improv artists host a bi-weekly show called Monkey Toast: The Improvised Talk Show. For each "episode" David Shore interviews up to three celebrity guests, providing the inspiration for the improv act to follow. Tonight's guests are Big Rude Jake and Jaymz Bee, which should make for some interesting moments. Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen Street West), 8 p.m., pay-what-you-can.
