WORDS: This evening at the Bay-Bloor Indigo, join author James McBride and director Spike Lee for a discussion about the film adaptation of McBride's 2003 novel, Miracle at St. Anna. There will be a book signing after, but attendees are asked not to bring additional memorabilia—sadly, collectors will have to hang out in front of five-star hotels this weekend if they want any autographs they can sell on eBay. Indigo (55 Bloor Street West), 7:30 p.m., FREE.

MUSIC: Canadian pop-punk group Simple Plan are playing at the Molson Amphitheatre tonight. Opening for them are pop-punk band Faber Drive, pop-punk team Cute Is What We Aim For, and pop-punk outfit Metro Station. You may remember Simple Plan from 2002. Molson Amphitheatre (909 Lakeshore Boulevard West), 7 p.m., $22.50–$32.50.

MUSIC: In case you were jonesing to go to another overpriced classic rock concert, Lynyrd Skynyrd can help you with that. They're playing at the Molson Amphitheatre this evening, joined by rocker and clever lyricist Kid Rock and one third of Run-D.M.C. Molson Amphitheatre (909 Lakeshore Boulevard West), 6:30 p.m., $25.50–$75.

MUSIC: Grammy Award–winning pop band Maroon 5 is playing tonight. Joining them are pop group The Counting Crows, and some chick named Sara Bareilles who had a song in a Rhapsody commercial. If you go, make sure to encourage all the teenyboppers around you to cheer extra loudly; maybe they'll get invited backstage by Adam Levine! Molson Amphitheatre (909 Lakeshore Boulevard West), 7:30 p.m., $28.50–$126.

FESTIVAL: The Canadian National Exhibition is back and bigger than ever this year. Along with the usual carnival rides, games, and snacks, there will be an outdoor acrobatic and pyrotechnic circus performance, equestrian shows, an escape artist, and the always-popular IAMS SuperDogs Show. Visitors can also get a preview of new state-of-the-art TTC subway cars set to debut in 2010, which will be on display in front of the Direct Energy Centre for the duration of the CNE. Plus, if you go tonight, you'll be treated to a live performance by Q107 deejay (and uh, rock star) Kim Mitchell. Exhibition Place (100 Princes' Boulevard), 10 a.m.–10 p.m., $14.

Sorry Spice Girls: R.E.M. just one-upped you in the "most exciting concert of 2008" department.

At the White Stripes show on Friday night at the Molson Amphitheatre:

It must be tough having famous parents, especially if you choose to follow in their footsteps, professionally. Consider a case like Los Angeles' The Like, three girls in a rock band whose fathers include Attractions drummer Pete Thomas, highly-regarded producer Mitchell Froom and producer/exec Tony Berg. While inheriting ridiculously musical genes can only be considered a plus, you can bet that critics will be watching extra-carefully, ready to trot out the n-word (that's "nepotism", folks) at the first hint that any success isn't honestly earned.
