He was best known to children of the eighties as the iconic host of Canada's first major daily music video show, CFMT's Video Singles in 1983, which pre-dated MuchMusic and led to the legendary Toronto Rocks program on CityTV (click here for a clip of the intro). Perched before multiple TV screens on a tiny set, John Majhor's loose style and low-fi production would foreshadow the oft-copied format that CityTV would make famous over the next two decades. Majhor quickly became a pin-up veejay in the mid-80s, along with his MuchMusic compatriot J.D. Roberts, while Flashdance-style Toronto Rocks! sweatshirts became ubiquitous across the city.

With Torontoist's past two "sports" entries being titled "Toronto Bike Posts Both Strong and Vulnerable" and "We've Got a Thing 'bout The Post-and-Ring" (the first installment of the two-part series on our city's bike posts), the Adorable Sports Writer feels like it's time to re-capture the floor.
Writer and transit nut James Bow has disproven a cherished Toronto myth, that Yonge Street is the longest street in the world.
The last time the Toronto Blue Jays touched post-season turf Jean Chretien was two days away from his first Majority Government, Aerosmith's Get a Grip was Billboard's #1 album and the Adorable Sports Writer was likely sporting an undershave. Sadly it's been one partially locked-out and ten full seasons since Joe Carter hit one of baseball's most memorable home runs. However during that span, some pretty decent teams have filled the Skydome/Rogers Centre's home dugout. Four Cy-Young's have been awarded to Jays pitching and Carlos Delgado was robbed of an MVP trophy in 2003. Unfortunately that's life in the American League East, where competition has consisted of All-World New York Yankee lineups and extremely strong Boston Red Sox teams.
Canada faced a tougher challenge than expected in their World Baseball Classic opener Tuesday evening. After giving up three runs during an eighth inning South African rally, Ernie Whitt's team found themselves heading to the ninth trailing by a run. Fortunately the team exploded, scoring four in their next series while creating some breathing room for Minnesota Twins Jesse Crain to close out the 11-8 victory. Former Blue Jay Corey Koskie homered for the Canadians.
Loved as much off the field as he was on, it's hard to find a negative word spoken about the 10-time all-star (minus a few exceptions). Sadly, it was in 1995 that glaucoma tore him away from the game that he loved. Even more sad, yesterday's passing has tore him away from the world that loved him.
There's cause for celebration tonight: As you read this, the NBA is approving a proposed trade between the Toronto Raptors and the New Jersey Nets that would see the Vince Carter in a different uniform. A Raptor team that has struggled on and off the court this year is having it’s biggest tumor removed as General Manager Rob Babcock worked out a deal that will finally send Vinsanity packing.
Torontoist stuck to their promise and waited for an end to the losing steak prior to any mention of the struggling Toronto Raptors. Last night they were able to snap a seven game skid with a 96-90 win against and the Minnesota Timberwolves. With a career performance out of youngster Chris Bosh and the physical dominance of fan favourite Matt "The Red Rocket" Bonner, the Raps took the “M” and “V” out of reigning MVP Kevin Garnett.
, or hopefully will go absent altogether very soon. While emcee/lyricist Eyedea and DJ/turntablist Abilities win all kinds of rhyming battles and turntable competitions, they still manage to be irritating on record. Torontoist prediction after tonight: Emo-rap is out, food-rap is in.
