We have not one but two civics related events tonight in Toronto. At Trinity St. Paul's church just near Bloor and Spadina we have Jane Jacobs: A Public Celebration. There have been plenty of smaller celebrations for the life of Jane Jacobs but one more never hurts.

The story goes that editors Carol Shields and Marjorie Anderson were having lunch one day when they decided that, even with all the good the feminist movement had done, there were still so many unanswered questions; ones that some were afraid to ask or that took them by surprise. They commissioned a number of women writers to give it a voice and Dropped Threads: What We Aren't Told was the result.

Things are going great for previous Torontoist interview subject Howard Akler. His debut novel the City Man has been getting rave reviews and was recently nominated in the first-time authors category for the Commonwealth Writer's Prize (Caribbean and Canada Region). Akler joins a list which includes long-time poet and writer, but first-time novelist George Elliot Clarke and Calgary author Jacqueline Honnet. The winner of the regional prize goes on to compete against other fine books from the Commonwealth.
