Release The Goo, All-Natural Edition

Creme eggs aren't the only things releasing the goo at this time of year: when the days get longer and the snow starts melting, maple sap starts flowing and fans of pure Canadian sugar rushes head straight for the nearest sugar bush. We're hard-pressed to think of a better way to celebrate the imminent arrival of spring than getting gooned on pancakes and maple syrup. Fortunately, you don't have to go far out of the city to find a celebration of this quintessential Canadian sweetener.

Torontoist is one of fourteen cities in the worldwide Gothamist network. Once a week, the editors of each site—from LAist to Londonist—compile some of their most interesting posts into a brief blurb. It's Elsewhere In The Ist-A-Verse, and it appears, across the network, every Sunday.

God bless our sister site LAist for discovering The Canadian Cafe (no, there's no acute accent), a small restaurant 4,000 kilometres away, in Montrovia, L.A., where (their website claims beside a clip art picture of a moose dressed as a mountie) "You'll Find Family Dining With A Taste Of The North."

March is moving out like a lamb and Toronto is up for a double shot of groovy spring feelings this week with the re-mounting of Hair, the Tribal Love Rock musical and the return of strawberries. It's the time of the season for these plump, glossy red berries to be making their appearance at fruit stands all over the city. Pair them with a creamy honeyed yogurt cheese straight from the Age of Aquarius and you're ready for some seriously good vibrations, baby.

At right: Aussie hands can't keep off Canadian tarts.

If the GTA supply of challa bread is completely depleted by the weekend, you can blame this website: Today we unveil our famous challa french toast recipe!

Hours: Monday to Friday (closed Wednesdays), 9:00am to 3:00pm; Saturdays and Sundays, 10:00am to 3:00pm.

There’s no need to turn up the volume at Kubo Radio because they are cranking out the Asian fusion eats, treats, rock, soul and kung fu all at once. In fact it’s a bit hard to even keep up.  Our very cute waiter sports a tee that says “Dim Sum Fooey” and in between taking orders and serving a full house, he still manages to find the time to dance with his co-worker in the back of the spacious restaurant.  How cute is that?  Even more so is the smart fusion of not just great food, but excellent service and good music (starting with Cheap Trick’s classic “I Want You to Want Me” and getting better from there…though a slight bit too loud) – there’s even kung fu movies playing on some of the monitors on the wall – making this a fun an alive spot on the Queen East strip in Leslieville.
