Vintage Toronto Ads: Phoning It In from Lake Shore Boulevard

Because modern technology should never allow anyone the opportunity to be totally removed from the office...will a disastrous business transaction cause our phone-wielding businessman too much anxiety to enjoy a ball game?

Once upon a time, the stretch of Lake Shore Boulevard around Park Lawn Road was a stop for tourists and those looking for a quick good time, thanks to nearly thirty motels that lined the strip. All but three (Casa Mendoza, Shore Breeze, and Beach) are gone now, leaving empty lots awaiting their probable transformation into condominiums with romantic views of Lake Ontario and the Mr. Christie cookie plant.

At their crudest, graffiti tags are generally used for the artist’s personal aggrandizement. While it is not uncommon for graffitists to tag the names legendary celebrities (Tupac anyone?) much more rare is the tagger who promotes the work of classical composers posthumously.

This was Toronto’s downtown at 10:30 a.m. yesterday, as seen from Lakeshore Boulevard near the Canadian Exhibition Grounds. Air Quality Ontario’s Air Quality Index measured a daytime high of 54, which put Toronto’s air well into the “Poor” category. The day before, the AQI hit 59.

A morning crash has closed off a Gardiner exit ramp and yesterday's burst water main repairs continue to block motorists. Workers will be reconstructing Lake Shore Boulevard over the next 24 hours. Burst water mains will be around for awhile: Toronto has one of the highest failure rates for water mains in Canada. Toronto's backlog of repairs to the system will take about 8 years to flush out.

The one that's getting the most talk from the media and City Hall is tearing down a part of the elevated highway and replacing it with a widened Lakeshore Boulevard.

Another death on the Gardiner. A motorcyclist died in an accident around 7:30 pm. Earlier reports blamed racing but a police detective said the biker was most likely trying to perform a wheelie when his bike flipped over and killed the rider.

Unless you've been asleep for the last 24 hours you already know that Italy won the World Cup. Torontonians celebrate all over the city but the bulk of the partying centred on College St. and up on Corso Italia on St. Clair.

For all time we spend slagging councillor Howard Moscoe even on the worst of days he doesn't come close to the Mouth of Etobicoke, Rob Ford.

Part of the networked city, the pigeon condo has been erected down at Yonge and Lakeshore, under the Gardiner.

Apparently police in Montreal will now be fining pedestrians who jaywalk, we figure this'll be like fining Montrealers for smoking. The anti-jaywalking blitz has raised the hackles of one Torontonian, Joe over at the Biking Toronto blog.

Whatever you do, don't say nobody warned you! Between Gerrard Street and Lakeshore Boulevard, and Yonge Street and the Don Valley Parkway, the power will out for at least 4 hours. Beginning at around 10:45 today, the lights went out in Toronto's downtown core - almost exactly seven months since it last happened. Please excuse our tardy posting schedule today, as Torontoist is obliged to take to the streets and direct traffic once again.
