Yeah, That's Why You Keep Seeing Kevin Smith in the Annex

Man, watching Clerks again for the first time in a blajillion years on a big screen with an audience makes you realize that Kevin Smith was actually pretty solid out of the gate in '94 ('sup haters. You wish you directed one of the most stolen videotapes ever). Or at least it makes you realize why studios thought it wise to start handing their dollars to a twenty-something Vancouver film school dropout.

COMEDY: After NDP Leader Jack Layton speaks at the Ontario NDP leadership debate this afternoon, he'll shake up the comedy scene on the improv stage. As a guest star on the talk show Monkey Toast, Layton follows the likes of Mayor David Miller, Canadian Idol's Jake Gold, and Royal Canadian Air Farce’s Don Ferguson, whose interviews have all served as comedy fodder for the show in the past. BNN’s Kim Parlee and comedian Ron Sparks will also be guest starring tonight. Don’t miss it. Gladstone Hotel Ballroom (1214 Queen Street West), 8 p.m., pay-what-you-can.

Not-so-Silent Bob at the Bloor

Chances are, if you're a Kevin Smith fan, you've already heard about this one via your Jay and Silent Bob secret decoder ring. But for everyone else, say what you will about his movies, Smith is still Storytelling Champion of the World (or at least of the DGA) when it comes to riffing with a live audience. That’s why the Bloor Cinema is brilliant for cashing in on his insanely well-received Evening With DVD series (wherein Smith answers fanboy questions and tells tales about life, love, Prince, and anal fissures) by organizing a three-day Kevin Smith Fest (wherein each and every movie is followed by a Q+A with the Jersey boy himself).

We find it very fitting that during the spookiest week of the year the film studios have gotten together and made sure to release their scariest films, the ones sure to bring fear and revulsion to all who dare to pay for a ticket and take a chance in a dark theatre.

Our title this week of course refers to Catch and Release, a film which has been so endlessly trailered on TV (and we don’t even watch that much) that Torontoist feels like we could recite the whole bloody film right now. “The man I was going to marry is dead! I’m sitting wearing my wedding dress and moping – it’s a girl thing! Kevin Smith is fat and talentless, but friends with Ben Affleck so he can be in this! I’ve fallen in love with you now, sexy and stereotypical unshaven male lead! The End!”

M. Night Shyamalan sure has painted himself into a corner, when you think about it. When we first heard about Lady in the Water we imagine we reacted the same way everyone else did, buy sighing “I wonder what the twist is.” Eye Weekly’s Adam Nayman has actually given the film some hefty (spoiler free) coverage, with a lovely little article about Shyamalan’s possible credibility implosion with the release of Sports Illustrated writer Michael Bamberger’s The Man Who Heard Voices: Or, How M. Night Shyamalan Risked His Career on a Fairy Tale, which, by the sounds of things, is even more damaging than how awful Lady in the Water is.

would ever last past its first season, let alone celebrate its 100th episode, as it did last night on CTV.

On Saturday night, Torontoist partied down to a remixed version of Monday, Monday by the Mamas & Papas with someone who may have been Jay and Silent Bob creator Kevin Smith.  Unfortunately our sources were under the influence of delicious food and Pinot Grigio and could neither confirm nor deny the statement.
