If anybody remembers last year's Snow Day, an ill-fated attempt to make snow in Trinity-Bellwoods Park with a defective snowmaker that lead to a giant snowball fight, you may be pleased to learn that exactly one year later, there is actually a bunch of snow on the ground, and the plan is the same. It seems the lesson about controlling Mother Nature has been learned, and our collective prayers have been answered.
While Newmindspace have organized subway parties in Toronto, SkyTrain parties in Vancouver, and métro parties in Montréal, sometimes nothing beats an old-fashioned streetcar party for a beat-bumping, track-turning, three hour party tour of the city. The TTC will rent a streetcar (PCC, CLRV or ALRV) for a minimum of three hours for a pretty steep fee to just about anybody. The customer can request a custom route, like Newmindspace has, that takes advantage of...
This Friday, November 16, we (Newmindspace) will be hosting our very first lightsaber battle! This summer at Burning Man, we witnessed a 10,000-person lightsaber battle put on by a camp called Watto's Junkyard, easily the largest lightsaber battle since the Jedi Civil War. However, with our limited resources, we realized that without a large donation from a rich weirdo (which are plentiful in San Francisco), we would probably not be able to get the plastic, LED-lit, colour-changing expanding kind without some sort of fundraising "starter battle" first.
It has been exactly one year since our last subway party, which means this one is long overdue! Dress in your spookiest, scariest, funniest, or furriest costume and meet us by the last car at Kipling station at 11:13 p.m.
With a little over twelve hours to go until this year's Capture the Flag, Lori and I are feeling anxious and excited.
When searching for a suitable title for the sequel to last year's massive street parade/subway party , we needed only to consult a thesaurus. Not only a 2000-era epic trance track by Ian Van Dahl, Castles in the Sky are also seemingly impossible tasks. Some people call them "pipe dreams." We call it the next Newmindspace event this Saturday.
Our own very Kevin Bracken, co-founder of newmindspace with Lori Kufner, just posted this video online today of the massive game of Capture the Flag that they organized at the end of September. 1,200 people showed up, which, at last count, is quite a lot. And hey, remember when it was warm enough to be outside with slivers of exposed flesh? Good times. Check it out:
There were lots of things to like about this weekend's Nuit Blanche: unique pieces, big crowds, and plenty of creative ways to pass twelve hours. Most of all, though, it just felt different. Nuit Blanche was Toronto transformed, a restless city core that became a huge party, and a taste of how we can do an admirable job at pulling something like this off.
When newmindspace put out a call for folks to come down to Kensington Market for a game of Capture the Flag, Kevin Bracken, one half of the heart of the operation, printed off 55 maps for participants. He thought he had overestimated how many people would show up, but figured he'd play it safe. To what was likely a combination of shock, delight, and ultimately being overwhelmed, 100 people came to play.
New Mind Spacer Kevin Bracken's 'totally regressive urban games' were a big hit in his hometown of NYC. So it's no surprise that he's bringing his shtick to Toronto. Yup, Capture the Flag is coming to Kensington Market, and the kids will be hiding behind fruit stands and Al Waxman in the pursuit of a little old school fun. This market-based Capture the Flag isn't the same as your field day games of yore though, because it somehow involves cellphones. Game is 9:30pm next Tuesday, but visit NewMindSpace for more details.
