Sound Advice: Country Club by John Doe and The Sadies

After releasing albums with other seminal punk/folk/blues artists such as Andre Williams (1999) and Jon Langford (2003), Toronto favourites The Sadies bring us their latest collaboration, out today on Outside Music, this time with tenacious musician and actor John Doe. Founder and frontman of the once-quintessential Los Angeles punk band X, it wasn't until Doe's solo 1990 debut, Meet John Doe, that he fully embraced the country direction X started taking in the late 1980s. He fits in just perfectly at the Sadies's Country Club.

2005_03_29MattMays.jpgHailing from Nova Scotia, Matt Mays & El Torpedo play the kind of music that simply sounds "Canadian", for all the positive and negative connotations that may come with the tag. We're talking big, rootsy rock in the grand tradition of Neil Young & Crazy Horse - thundering guitars, raw vocals, a healthy dose of twang - nothing groundbreaking, but when it's done right it's a marvelous thing. And Matt Mays does it pretty damn well.

Oh Sam Roberts, how the fratboys love you so. And Torontoist likes you too, though you once looked our friend's girlfriend up and down so many times he thought you might strain something. But that was then, and you were getting photographed at Bright Pearl Restaurant, and they were eating Har Gau, and that's all water under the proverbial bridge. Now you're all grown up and playing pared down accoustic shows, with the likes of Pale Sarah Harmer, Failer Kathleen Edwards and Fairest Jim Cuddy. Good on you. Good on everybody. 'Where have all the good people gone?' you ask. 'Why they're all here, Sam, you just can't tell because they're tucked under their well-worn baseball caps.'
