DESIGN: Karim Rashid has been at the forefront of accessible contemporary product design ever since he came up with the world’s most-recognized waste bucket for Umbra. But Rashid’s cool designs don’t stop at fun little familiar soap dispensers. He has just published KarimSpace, a full-colour book (with forward by architect Daniel Libeskind) showcasing forty of his latest top interior design works. We had a chance to peek at a few pages, and it was very difficult to choose only one to share—from a watermelon-evoking chaise-longue to a heavenly hall Barbie herself would love, the eye-candy just kept on giving. Have a look at the rest of the book, and meet the man himself when Random House and Rizzoli Publications hosts Karim Rashid’s Toronto book-signing at the Manulife Centre Indigo Book Store. If you’re one of the unfortunate souls who missed out on Helvetica way back in April—it was one of the big buzz films at Hot Docs this year—then mark October 16 on your calendar…maybe with a clean sans serif, in bold. Even italicized, depending on your level of excitement.

We can't say we were disappointed by the Interior Design Show because we had no expectations. We don't normally attend trade shows and we're starting to remember why. With thinly carpeted concrete floors, dry air, and despondent booth attendants gazing morosely at strolling flocks of terribly, terribly calm, distant and critical near-shoppers, trade shows have an energy only slightly less infectious than Zamboni time during long-track speed skating.
