Tall Poppy Interview: John Barber

John Barber has been observing and commenting on City Hall for the Globe and Mail for thirteen years. Those with an interest in our municipal government will have noticed his recent absence from the paper's political pages, most acutely during the rather juicy, comment-worthy last few weeks.

So obviously no one listened to us yesterday and as a result we broke a power usage record. People cranking their A/C, turning on fans and sticking heads into fridges caused us to use over 27,000 megawatts of electricity. That's over 800 megawatts more than our previous record set last July. We may even break that record again today, fingers crossed that we don't.

The Coalition for Municipal Change, a citizens group that rallied together to unseat Anne Johnston and elect Karen Stintz in her place, is scouring the city for candidates to take down Kyle Rae and Howard Moscoe. We've expressed our dislike of these two councillors before. Particularly Moscoe, whose incompetence at the head of the TTC has caused numerous debacles. But if the replacement is another Karen Stintz clone we hope that the Coalition falls flat on its face. In this case we're better off with the devil we know.

The Star reports on the visit of controversial British Imam Sheik Riyadh ul-Haq, who has publicly vilified Jews and Hindus in speeches. There are calls for Immigration Minister Monte Solberg to deny him his entry. He's made four previous visits to Canada and many in the Muslim community defend him as a legitimate and well-regarded speaker.

The Star reports that the TTC and eight other crime enforcement agencies have made another arrest in a huge scam involving fake TTC tokens.

Howard Moscoe's big mouth strikes again. According to the Star this time his target was Frances Nunziata. When the councillor complained about bus service in her ward the TTC chair quipped ""Councillor, I leave walking the streets to you." Nunziata felt that the remarks painted her as a prostitute. Moscoe later apologized. Moscoe seems to be a big hit with the women of council, earlier this year he insulted both Jane Pitfield and Karen Stintz when he organized a tongue-in-cheek office poll asking "How far will Lady Jane go?"

The transit loop at Avenue Road and Lawrence Avenue (across from Havergal College) will soon be transformed into a heart-shaped park. Along with the TTC, Lorne London (publisher of Post City Magazines) and city councillors Howard Moscoe and Karen Stintz are working to develop a beautiful neighbourhood park from an existing triangle-ish area of grass that measures nearly 100 by 100 feet. At the specified location, a lonely white sign with black and red lettering reads:

David "The Broom" Miller
