During TIFF we said, "if you’re as big a fan of Joy Division as Torontoist is, you’ll quickly come to terms with the fact that Control is simply one man’s interpretation of Deborah Curtis’s book Touching from a Distance, and your overall feelings will (probably) lie on how you feel about that interpretation," and we stand by that even now—despite the gorgeous cinematography, which remains the film’s strongest point, we still like 24 Hour Party People better (even though that’s really about Tony Wilson).

Out of respect for the funeral of Richard Bradshaw, the Toronto International Film Festival Group chose not to hold their traditional big final press conference in Nathan Phillips Square yesterday, and so with slightly less fanfare than usual we received a massive lump of press releases from the Festival announcing that they’ve announced absolutely everything about the festival there is to announce, pretty much.
This year the Toronto International Film Festival features a mind-melting 352 films and over 500 guests from across the world. It’s no wonder, then, that not only is the press conference in which they announce the majority of these almost impossible to keep up with but that we’ve spent the last couple of hours just trying to of a way to approach this post to give you the maximum amount of information without overwhelming you. We could just start yelling stuff out that we learned today randomly, we guess. Did you know there are 12,855 registered volunteers for this year’s festival, and that for the sixth consecutive year their most popular name is Jennifer? (Sucks to be you, Jennys of the world)
Natalie Portman may be twenty-three, but this still from Friday's flickpick makes her look like kid sister to tall, rakish Jude. And to add another layer of implausibility to the mix, Portman plays an exotic dancer. Be afraid. Be very afraid. We wish Natalie would just get into her Prius and drive away from all this nude scene nonsense. Maybe someone could work up a nice period piece for her. It would suit her stilted acting perfectly. Oh, but what are we doing? TOist is here to provide you a cheerful, lighthearted synopsis of a movie we've not even seen, and already we're prematurely harshing on Ms. Portman. How gauche of us.
