Toronto seems to get its annual dose of legendary outsider filmmaker John Waters around this time.

If today’s column title gets Rachel Sweet’s Hairspray stuck in your head for the rest of the day, good! Because then we’ll have made our point that the version of Hairspray hitting this weekend isn’t as good as the John Waters original. Though the music not being as good is only part of it. There’s also the inherent irony about making a musical in which one of the central themes is integration through a shared love of largely-African American music that features only music written by a couple of white dudes. Hell, the irony of just making a musical about that. Musicals are basically the whitest form of entertainment we can imagine.

Valentine's Day is only a few days away, and we here across the Gothamist network would like to tell you, in the spirit of the holiday, just how much we love you, our readers. Don't let it get to your heads, though. There are plenty of things we love, you included. Just be glad you're not amongst the things we hate.

but not actually meaningful.

6:00pm – The Fountain (Visa Screening Room (Elgin))

(This Filthy World and Radiant City are entirely seperate films showing at this year's TIFF, but as the Radiant City review has what you could consider a spoiler ["In a documentary?" - Ed.], it's been placed behind the jump.)

Documentaries aren’t usually the most hotly anticipated titles at each year’s Toronto International Film Festival, with most people, even by September, still probably a bit burnt out from Hot Docs, but that’s not to say that the documentaries at TIFF are any less valid. This year they’ve announced 22 titles as part of their Real to Reel programme (in addition to the 5 already announced in other programmes). Our pick of the titles confirmed to day include Jeff Garlin’s This Filthy World Starring John Waters, because who doesn’t love Water’s twisted take on life? (Even if he does look like that creepy orange guy on those infomercials). The Prisoner Or: How I Planned to Kill Tony Blair from Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker, and AJ Schnack's Kurt Cobain About a Son, because even though we feel like we’ve heard everything we can about Kurt, we still keep coming back to see if we can find out more. The full press release is available at TIFFG’s website.

, but that doesn't mean he won't take home the prize.
