Weekend Planner: September 5–6, 2009

AIR: If you thought it was noisy this afternoon, not to mention yesterday, get ready—that was just the warm-up. Vipers, Hawks, Griffons, Hornets, Raptors, and a bunch of guys whose names begin with the letter “M” salute you from the sky every afternoon this Labour Day weekend. The Canadian Forces’ Snowbirds and the United States Navy Blue Angels headline the Canadian International Air Show, now in its sixtieth year. The Angels return after a twenty-five-year absence from the noise we mean, spectacular. Other than following our coverage from the Air Show, the best place to see the action is anywhere along the lakeshore near the CNE. Lakefront at Marilyn Bell Park, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday 12:30–4:30 p.m., FREE or $15 for CNE admission.

FILM: John Hughes, a filmmaker best remembered for his iconic coming-of-age films of the 1980s, passed away last month, and to celebrate his life the Fox Theatre presents a mini marathon of some of Hughes' best work. The John Hughes Tribute will see five films written and directed by the late artist screened over three nights, starting with Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Weird Science tonight. The Breakfast Club and Pretty In Pink screen Wednesday, while Planes, Trains & Automobiles will round out the showcase on Thursday. Fox Theatre (2236 Queen Street East); 7 p.m. (Ferris Bueller's Day Off), 9:15 p.m. (Weird Science); $8 for members, $11 for non-members.

Couple of things going on with the films released this week. With Shutter, most interesting is that it’s based on a Thai horror film, but has been, in its Western remake, transplanted to Tokyo. Reasons? Well, either “all of Asia is basically the same thing, right?” or “people always think of scary pale girls with long black hair as being Japanese, anyway.”
