Well, that didn't take long: with the municipal workers' strike barely a day old, garbage is already piling up across the city, including in local parks. The above photo, taken early yesterday afternoon, shows a heap of refuse at Christie Pits; trash cans across Toronto are also starting to overflow, despite efforts by city workers to seal many bin openings with plastic wrap and signs imploring residents not to litter.

ZOMBIES: Put on your make-up and rip off your clothes—it’s the 2008 Toronto Zombie Walk! Sponsored by the concurrent Toronto After Dark Film Festival, the walk will stumble out of Trinity-Bellwoods Park, shuffle along Queen Street to Bathurst Street, and heave up to Bloor Street, finishing in the alley behind the Bloor Cinema. Zombies will receive a discount for tonight’s festival screenings. Brain-eating mayhem continues at the Annex Wreckroom for the Zombie Walk Afterparty, featuring Misfits tribute band The Skulls, with guests The Rock Ons and The Von Drats. (No cover, but donations toward next year’s street permit gratefully accepted.) Zombie participants should meet in the pit of despair at the Dundas Street end of the park. A funny thing happens on the western waterfront at the end of each summer. The Ex opens its doors to Children Of All Ages®, the Air Show deafens enthusiasts with aerobatic feats, and the City allows people to park—where else?—in the parks!

This evening, Toronto Culture and Fort York are unveiling a permanent public art installation under the Gardiner Expressway (off Fort York Boulevard, between Bathurst and Fleet Streets). In WATERTABLE, Toronto artists Lisa Steele and Kim Tomczak use video and lights to create the effect of rippling water on the underside of the highway—a reminder that the Gardiner runs along what used to the original shoreline of Lake Ontario. Ever wonder why the the Toronto Harbour Commission building is notably not on the harbour? It used to be surrounded by water on three sides!

These seats are empty now, but they won't be after today, as Mayor Miller and the 44 other city councillors take office. We found out recently that councillors are seated randomly, which explains why during the last council term loyal lefty Adam Giambrone sat right next to dogged mayoral critic Denzil Minnan-Wong.

A 12-year old girl who has been missing for two days has been found after an exhaustive search in the city's east end. She had run away after a fight with her parents.
