Last night the Pride Toronto Gala and Awards benefit went down at the Fermenting Cellar in the Distillery District. At $250 a plate, this was a major event and fund-raising effort that attempted to honour "community members who have demonstrated extraordinary achievement to queer life."

Hundreds marched around Downtown Toronto for the Stop the Violence walk on Sunday but this weekend, around Toronto, there was a different story. Police reported that three people were shot: one of them was a 13-year old boy who walked into Etobicoke General Hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Gun violence has claimed two more lives; a sixteen year old boy and a man were killed in a rash of gun violence yesterday night as shootings flared all over the city. They're the city's 14th and 15th murders. Four other people were shot last night but fortunately they all survived. Torontoist suspects that warmer weather will mean more gun violence.
It's a weekend of returns. College teachers are going back to the classrooms after three weeks of being on the picket lines. An arbitrator has been brought in to negotiate a settlement between the teachers and their employers.
The two Canadians and one British members of peace group Christian Peacemakers have been rescued after four months of captivity. One of them includes Toronto activist James Loney (pictured here). Their captivity also led to a number of peace rallies in the Toronto area. We're just glad to hear that the three men will be coming home soon and a little bit sad that the fourth hostage, American Tom Fox won't be joining them. He was found dead earlier this month.
