Archives of Our Lives

With hundreds of thousands of historic documents and more than 1.2 million photos dating from 1856, the Toronto Archives are a great way to connect with Toronto’s past. But for those of us who don’t want to make the trek to Dupont station, let alone leave our seats, the Archives’ online resources and virtual exhibits offer the next best thing. "People think of archives and libraries as inaccessible ivory towers," explained Archives Supervisor Charmaine Lindsay. "So, making the city’s history more personal is an important goal of this. Not everyone can come into the Archives; online exhibits tend to be less academic than paper ones, and they’re more accessible."

Islington Station's Icy Dilemma

Islington Station, despite being underground, can get pretty frigid when cold winds sweep in through the tunnel (sometimes it can feel even colder than Rosedale). This winter, the temperature in the station hit a new low, and icicles started to form on the ceiling above the eastbound tracks on the east side of the platform. The icicles were last visible on Monday, when the temperature was below zero. Since then, they have melted in the warmer weather. While the icicles looked cool (no pun intended), they pose a problem; if they’re forming, it means that water is leaking in through the ceiling. We sent photos of the problem to the TTC and asked Danny Nicholson, the TTC's Corporate Communications Supervisor, about the icicles and the potential water damage. He told us that "the icicles are caused by a structural leak in the roof of the tunnel. Repairs are scheduled to take place, but not likely until next week or the week after. [We] won’t be able to get any more details about the leak until Monday."

Good Riddance to Bad Architecture

As part of the TTC’s ongoing plan to modernize the stations along the Bloor-Danforth line, Victoria Park is getting a brand new bus terminal. According to the TTC’s website, it won’t be finished until 2010; until then, the old commuter parking lot at Denton and Victoria Park avenues will serve as a temporary terminal. The modified routes, which will bypass the station and the soon-to-be-demolished terminal as of Sunday, February 15, include 12 Kingston Road, 24 Victoria Park, 67 Pharmacy, and 404 East York Community.

Way, way, back, Torontoist reported that transit activists were busy organizing a transit forum in an attempt to promote civic engagement in public transit. You've probably been wondering, "what ever happened to that forum? Could Torontoist have misreported?" Well, we were a year off in our prediction as to when it was to happen, but it is happening: this Friday and Saturday join transit activists, politicians, and the staff of various transit providers to help breath more energy into what may possibly be our favorite way to get around.

Dave Miller isn't the only baller in the GTA. Mayor Hazel McCallion of Mississauga will put on a B-Ball clinic with Thatcher-like authority tomorrow for the 2nd annual 2005 adidas All Canadian Basketball Game. Hazel will throw up the jump ball at 2 P.M. at Mississauga's Hersey Centre.
