Sarah Lazarovic—curator of the garage-based Montrose Portrait Gallery of Canada—is painting a portrait of a Torontonian every day. Each Monday, we'll feature one of those portraits here. Leonard Cohen thinks Mike's serves up the best hot dogs in town (we thought he'd be all about Buddha Dog!). He's known to take friends and fans down to the John Street doggery for a bite. On a recent snack-finding mission, Mike's friendly man at the grill was......

Photo by apanatchi from Flickr. Usually considered a street-stall food, pad thai is not available in Toronto a la cart due to some stringent law in our fair city about hot dogs and their superiority. That having been said, there is still oodles of great pad thai on offer in Toronto, for sit-in, take-out and, as chosen for our challenge, delivery. Please note we used the word "oodles" because it rhymes with "noodles." You......

Canadian Bar Association demands that Stephen Harper negotiate with the United States to return Omar Khadr to Canada. The country's largest legal organization (and Khadr's own American military lawyer, for that matter) states that Khadr will not get a fair trial in the United States, which is obvious. Also obvious: the likelihood of Harper doing exactly dick about it. Gay Nicaraguan man goes into hiding in Toronto after being denied refugee status. Which is......

Yesterday, the province gave Toronto $52,000 to test recycling programs in apartment complexes as part of the goal to divert 70 per cent of waste from landfill by 2010. King Street is still closed off because of the falling marble slab. Developer Harry Stinson says that it was a bad idea using marble in the first place. Police shot a man in the chest near Kingston Rd. E. and Lawrence Ave. early this morning.......

City council says up to 2,500 tonnes of dog poop are deposited in park trash bins every year. This is problematic since our garbage dumps in Michigan refuse to take it. So where should we put our growing heap of canine feces? Councillor Pam McConnell (Ward 28, Toronto Centre-Rosedale) thinks the city should provide green bins in parks, while Councillor Paula Fletcher (Ward 30, Toronto-Danforth) doesn't think it's a big deal for dog owners......

We don't know about you, but it's friggin cold out there. Well, not for some of you. It seems as though places that are supposed to be cold are warm and places that are supposed to be warm are cold. Or maybe that's just us. Either way, we're freezing. Austinist said goodbye to their co-editor (sell-out) and played rumor monger on the SXSW lineup. And when dozens of dead birds littered downtown Austin, it's Big......

Torontoist visits the site of a new Frank Gehry structure, stalks "the elusive Bahamas streetcar", and watches Tom Green get surgery. Phillyist rejoices in the Phillies' wild card chances, mourns the injuries sustained by Eagles defensive end Jevon Kearse, and goes pirate on our asses. SFist notes that Guns and Roses were in town, that San Franciscans are taking over reality TV, and that the San Francisco Chronicle's skills of original nomenclature could use some......

What, it's over? Filmmakers, fans, industry people and most of all bloggers are in shock that this year's TIFF is coming to an end. Vickie over at Moviepie Musings has even given it a name Post Festival Sickness. I hate PFS. And, if it really is PFS, it’s not even waiting until after my final screening to kick in this year. Evil! I am fighting its onset tooth and nail, dosing myself with plenty of......

Oh dear! After reading another Torontoist's reappraisal of Frankz, while dashing to the Ryerson to catch Werner Herzog's Rescue Dawn we stopped in to pick up a couple of hot dogs, thinking it would take less than 15 minutes, and found ourselves trapped for what felt like hours. Despite being quiet, the few customers in front of us had their orders confused, which took far more dialogue between staff and customers than it really required.......

Frank'z Finest Hot Dog Palace (335A Yonge St.) opened up back in May to lackluster reviews. Most reviewers found the hot dogs to be of no higher quality than the average cart vendor's, and similar quality complaints were made about the chili, french fries, and hot dog buns. Worst, the prices were higher than a vendor's, so on top of the mediocre quality. One of those reviews was mine. I disagreed about the chili,......

Chief Bill Blair points out that gun crime in the city is down this year. He feels that increased policing, cooperation from the community and a specialized anti-gun task force have put the pinch on gun crime. With a month left in the summer we hope he doesn't jinx us. Maybe the reason why gun crime is down is because people prefer to get behind the wheel of their SUVs, minivans and sedans and run......
