The letters pages of this month's issue of Masthead magazine are positively snark-laden. Taddle Creek's Editor-in-Chief sees fit to quibble with the high praise given Spacing Mag's buttons in last mo's issue for not using an authentic TTC font. But the actual backgrounds on the pins aren't real either - Designer Matt Blackett illustrated them to represent the look of the TTC stations - so it's a bit of a silly point of contention. That said, Taddler-in-Chief Conan Tobias alights us to the fact that a TTC font is available from typographer David Vereschagin. TOist wants in on said fontage, be it postscript, truetype or falsetype.

Breaking! Actually, this news is not breaking at all. TOist just wanted to know what it felt like to be Matt Drudge for a minute. And we do believe this item of government-sponsored gossip is hot, perhaps even hott. Why is Kiefer not playing the role of a lifetime, the role of his granddad's lifetime in the biopic of the latter? And who is the respected actor taking his place in the Saskatchewan-shot screen gem? Brent Butt! George Stroumboulopoulos! Good guesses both, but no. Tommy will be played by a theatre actor. You heard it here second. Actually, you heard nothing here second because all we know is that it's not Kiefer. And all he wanted was a chance to play the Greatest Canadian who also happens to be his forefather. Poor guy.

and was promptly kicked out of the Liberal caucus. Now she's decided to make a further ass out of herself by appearing on Global's Train 48. Which is a shame since C.P. had an interesting political career going, even winning the largest nomination meeting in the history of Canadian politics in 1993. I guess this all means there will never be a Lake Carolyn. Parrish the thought.

Why wasn't Dan Ackroyd CBC's 'Greatest Canadian?' The network's exercise in garish anointment (rightly) gave us Tommy Douglas as Prime Time star for the evening, but Dan's got the charisma and the c.v. too! Gawker's Scoop gives us the lowdown on Ackroyd's rampant America-hating, and just in time for the commander-in-chief's visit to Dan's home turf too. All this Krankery is, in TOist's opinion, perfect pr for Ackroyd's cranky new film, though Ms. Scoop doesn't think so. Dan's in the finest form we've seen since The Great Outdoors.

After a long-winded “showdown” last night, the big reveal of The Greatest Canadian airs tonight. No matter what the outcome of the CBC’s potentially petard-hoisting populist voting process (Don Cherry? really?), your fashion vote should be for Pierre Elliott Trudeau. The man, not the airport, who romanced Liona and Barbra and Bianca is undisputedly the most charming of the final contenders. This graphic Trudeau Tribute T-shirt, currently on sale for $23.50 and $18.75 from London, ON-based AllMaple Apparel, is equally charming. An evolution of the eponymous online arts magazine, the fledgling line gives the faux-vintage style of Abercrombie & Fitch a polite Canadian whoopin’ -- golf shirts are embroidered not with moose, or wealthy polo playboys, or crocodiles, but with a bona fide Canadian heritage what marketing-savvy graphic designer Garland Lyn did for disco and Ryan McGinness started with his slogan tees. (And the brand name is no misnomer: both the designs and the clothing they’re on are made in Canada.)

At first, it seemed a little odd that Toronto Argonauts' coach Mike "Pinball" Clemons was left off the CBC's "Greatest Canadian" search. This man has devoted his entire playing career to the CFL's Toronto Argonauts, and now has led the team to the Grey Cup final as a head coach. The case for Clemons as the "Greatest Canadian," however, is quickly derailed by the fact that he's from Florida. Still, Clemons has taken the underdog Boatmen all the way to the final against the B.C. Lions this Sunday in Ottawa, the first time since 1997.
