Yesterday was Canada Day. Well, actually, technically it wasn't because Canada Day is officially celebrated on the second of July whenever the first of July falls on a Sunday. But that sort of thing only matters to the people who insist that the new millennium started in 2001 rather than 2000, and who wants to be one of those people?

Residential property taxes have skyrocketed this year, almost twice the rate of inflation. To lessen the blow, the city is considering a plan to set "pay-as-you-throw" fees for household waste pickup that would be integrated into your water bill. A standard-size garbage bin would cost $4 per month for weekly pickup, but the fee would increase with a special larger bin. There would be no penalty for additional recycling and compost pickup.

We're a little late with this week's music listing--blame the election! Er, okay, maybe someone just got immersed in learning a bit of Flash and let it slip. It won't happen again.

So apparently there's some sort of thing going on up in Barrie at (Molson) Park Place this Saturday. A whole bunch of bands, raising awareness, blah blah blah. The bill looks something like this - African Guitar Summit, Barenaked Ladies, Blue Rodeo, Bruce Cockburn, Bryan Adams, The Bachman Cummings Band, Deep Purple, DobaCaracol featuring Kna'an, Gordon Lightfoot, Great Big Sea, Jann Arden, Jet, Les Trois Accords, Motley Crue, Our Lady Peace, Sam Roberts, Simple Plan, Tegan & Sara, The Tragically Hip, Tom Cochrane, DMC and a headlining performance by Neil Young. Tickets were free but are gone daddy gone and if you want one, well, there's always people who know people. Or you can stay home and watch it on TV - CTV begins coverage of the show, as well as the other ones taking place around the world, at 11AM Saturday morning.

Forget about all the new music making its way to Toronto this summer -- old classics should be given the same coverage. That's why Torontoist and Mom went down to Massey Hall last night to catch Gordon Lightfoot's second concert of the week.
