READING: Before his band's show tonight at the Music Gallery, Drew Daniel of electronic duo Matmos will be reading from his tribute to Throbbing Gristle's album 20 Jazz Funk Greats (as part of the 33 1/3 book series). This Ain't the Rosedale Library (86 Nassau Street), 1 p.m., FREE. MUSIC: The Eagles are a cover band. They cover songs by a 1970s rock group, also named The Eagles (weird!). The two bands are very similar,......

Canadian Bar Association demands that Stephen Harper negotiate with the United States to return Omar Khadr to Canada. The country's largest legal organization (and Khadr's own American military lawyer, for that matter) states that Khadr will not get a fair trial in the United States, which is obvious. Also obvious: the likelihood of Harper doing exactly dick about it. Gay Nicaraguan man goes into hiding in Toronto after being denied refugee status. Which is......

City budget passes: 7.9 billion smackers for the year. Noteworthy: city councillors decided that keeping their free golf passes was extremely important. I don't think most of Rob Ford's proposed budget cuts are anything but hamfisted, but come on, City Council—pay for your own goddamned golf game, willya? TTC worker killed, causing shutdown of the city's busiest subway line for an entire day. Most interesting note: he was part of the only asbestos removal team......

If you picked up a copy of this week's Eye, you may have noticed that the text along the bottom of the cover claims that "It's official! Eye Weekly has the largest circulation of any urban weekly in Canada!*" Yipee! That asterisk leads to small text running up the side of the paper that reads "119,873 copies picked up each week. Verified Audit Circulation Interim Audit Report. April '06 - Sept. '06." The point......

Ontario Lottery Corporation recalls over a million scratch lotto cards after a customer complains you can see a winner without scratching. Between this and the retailers-stealing-jackpot-tickets flap a few months ago, it is probably even odds that every Ontario lotto jackpot in the last five years has been won by one guy in Whitby named Fred. Four mature maple trees cut down to make room for a screen from the Islington Golf Club. The......

All the news outlets are talking about the TTC strike but lots of other things happened on the weekend. A couple was killed in a bad traffic accident on Saturday night. Police suspect street racing as a possible cause. Leslie Scrivener of the Star writes a nice synopsis of the city's cycling culture. The story includes decent photos of scantily clad cyclists.... HOT. Mayor Miller is pissed off at ads that the Port Authority is......

Toronto doctor Gino Bucchino will be representing Italian ex-pats in the Italian parliament after winning a tight election. He'll be representing all of North America. West side cheesemaker Mario Pelosi makes damn good ricotta. Actually he makes the world's best ricotta, and that's not just Torontoist being proud of fellow Torontonians. Judges at the World Cheese Championship gave the nod to Mr. Pelosi of International Cheese Co. He led the Canadian delegation to a third......

The Metro Toronto Convention Centre is currently hosting the Toronto Star Annual Golf & Travel Show, which will be running until Sunday at 6:00pm. Come down and demo that new set of clubs you’ve been looking at, or plan that perfect golf vacation. Although there are lots of deals to be had, Torontoist advises you get there early.
