Arch Rival

Many Torontonians are unaware that Chinatown East even exists, let alone that a significant landmark—almost a decade in the making—opened last week at Gerrard and Broadview. The Zhong Hua Men ("Chinese Arch") brings a higher profile to Chinatown East, and gives the district a gateway that its famous cousin on Spadina surprisingly doesn't have.

Maybe all these cultural festivals in Toronto aren't your cup of tea, but with the summer season nearing a close the best may very well have been saved for last. The Festival of South Asia held on Gerrard Street East (between Greenwood and Coxwell Avenue) starts this Saturday at 2 p.m. and continues through to Sunday. With a short list of sponsors and a couple of them companies that actually sell Indian products, this experience already seems more authentic than Taste of the Danforth.

narulapic.jpgToronto vegetarians are mourning the closure of East-end veggie haunt Narula's Chaat, Dosa & Thali House. Recently, the windows were papered up and the exterior now displays a large "for lease or rent" sign. The owners decided it was time to retire.

Nine graduate students at Ryerson University and York University in the communications and culture program have banded together to create Make the World Your Salon: Modernist Salon Culture, an exhibit that resurrects the salon culture of the early twentieth century frequented by the bohemian artists of the day. The exhibit encompasses photography, artwork, and multi-media, and features graphic photography by New Yorker Carl Van Vechten; a reproduction of Marcel Duchamp’s With White Noise; and the screening of a documentary film about the Paris salon of Natalie Barney and her Sapphic circle.

A morning crash has closed off a Gardiner exit ramp and yesterday's burst water main repairs continue to block motorists. Workers will be reconstructing Lake Shore Boulevard over the next 24 hours. Burst water mains will be around for awhile: Toronto has one of the highest failure rates for water mains in Canada. Toronto's backlog of repairs to the system will take about 8 years to flush out.

Gerrard Street just east of Carlaw is a poor part of town that can get a bit scrappy. But it sports the only mall for blocks in every direction, Gerrard Square, which was for years know as "the Scare." Now the Scare has gone upmarket, bringing in the usual cast of box stores and big franchises with more to come.

Whatever you do, don't say nobody warned you! Between Gerrard Street and Lakeshore Boulevard, and Yonge Street and the Don Valley Parkway, the power will out for at least 4 hours. Beginning at around 10:45 today, the lights went out in Toronto's downtown core - almost exactly seven months since it last happened. Please excuse our tardy posting schedule today, as Torontoist is obliged to take to the streets and direct traffic once again.
