First major solar farm project in Ontario approved. The 40-megawatt farm in Sarnia will generate .02 percent of Ontario's energy needs, which is...well, a start, if nothing else. Now how about some investment in nanosolar technology, Ontario? And rocket-packs? Can we have environmentally friendly rocket-packs? However, this good enviro-news is balanced out by Ontario environment commissioner Gord Miller issuing a special report on how budget cuts at provincial ministries are crippling efforts to protect the......

Hey, have you been outside? It's hella cold. Yesterday kicked-off the LCBO's new bottle recycling program, and the homeless dig it. It's estimated that the program could increase the recycling of wine and spirit bottles by 30-40%. My dad can chase down your dad. After his minivan was stolen with his 3-year-old son inside, Derrick Lahey jumped into the family car and hunted down the perp - the van was found less than a......

The Tories are taking a chainsaw to Status of Women Canada, closing three-quarters of the organization's regional offices, including Toronto's. Heritage Minister Bev Oda insisted that the budget cuts and office closings will streamline the department and make it more efficient. Just like a business! Because government should be run like a business! In other comedy news, the Liberal leadership convention started yesterday. Given the choice between Michael Ignatieff, Bob Rae, Gerard Kennedy and......

Liberal leadership candidate Gerard Kennedy is the first to take a stand against the Harper-Duceppe motion to declare Quebec "a nation within a united Canada." Kennedy states, "I respect the sense of identity shared by many Quebecers, reflecting a common culture, language, history and accomplishment and I will continue to promote that identity, rather than playing divisive political games with it." BC Premier Gordon Campbell uses the hotly debated topic to promote his own agenda......

United Church Minister Cheri DiNovo and the NDP have taken Parkdale-High Park away from Sylvia Watson and the Liberals. The NDP won the riding with 41% of the vote, despite the Liberals summoning 11 cabinet ministers and high profile members like Bob Rae and Gerard Kennedy to campaign with former city councillor Sylvia Watson. 20,000 or so names are going to be taken off the city's voting list because the city has been unable to......

Gord Perks, well known environmental columnist, activist and NDP candidate in Davenport during the last federal election, is running for city council in Ward 14 (Parkdale-High Park). Current councillor Sylvia Watson will be running in a September provincial by-election to try and fill the seat vacated by Gerard Kennedy. Perks wasn't able to unseat Liberal Mario Silva in Davenport but Ward 14 is another matter. He'll undoubtedly get help from the NDP and MP Peggy......

A 12-year old girl who has been missing for two days has been found after an exhaustive search in the city's east end. She had run away after a fight with her parents. It seems that the Feds are stiffing Toronto about $6 million in homeless funding. The shortfall means the city can't sign service agreements with social organizations. Construction of new facilities for the homeless will also be affected. Thank you Ottawa may we......

Big news on the municipal election front. Former mayor John Sewell wants back into the concrete clamshell. He's running in Ward 21 against Miller ally Joe Mihevc. Sewell has the support of Margaret Smith and many from the Save Our St. Clair campaign that lobbied against the right-of-way. Sylvia Watson, current councillor in Ward 14 (Parkdale-High Park), wants out of City Hall and is looking to fill Gerard Kennedy's seat at Queen's Park. This will......

Mayor Miller officially launched his re-election campaign by not mentioning Jane Pitfield and throwing a party instead. Over a dozen councillors showed up to lend their support and even environmentalist Robert Kennedy Jr. sent in a video message. Over 600 cops get together and stage raids on 60 locations and arresting over 40 people in Rexdale. The raids are gang related but the media are waiting on a noon-hour press conference from the police. Gerard......

Students at West Toronto Collegiate are being tested for tuberculosis after one of their classmates tested positive for the lung disease. Health officials are just being cautious and don't think TB has spread. Cecilia Zhang's killer will get at least 15-years without parole. It's more than the 12 his lawyers were asking for and less than the 17-20 the Crown wanted. Parts of the city including the DVP are on flood alert. We're expecting 40......

It's official, Gerard Kennedy will be running for the federal Liberal leadership. Minister of Community and Social Services Sandra Pupatello will be taking over Kennedy's job as Education Minister. In other Liberal Leadership news Bob Rae is joining the party. Police are called in to a West End apartment building to defuse a bomb. Nobody was hurt but one man is under arrest and will also be going psychiatric assessment. Kids in Scarborough won't have......

Police are still flummoxed by the Tim Horton's fire on Sunday. The Globe calls the events puzzling and the Star quotes the police reassuring Torontonians that this wasn't an act of terrorism. Both use this quote which sadly doesn't tell us much. "We don't know whether this was an accidental or deliberate act at this time," Staff Sergeant Myron Demkiw said. Harper and Co. are rolling out their agenda today with the throne speech. The......

David Suzuki gives the Ontario government big ups on its new energy plan. The plan will buy energy from sustainable sources at a premium, hopefully acting as a catalyst to these energy sources in the province. The tractors are still circling Queen's Park, the Tories are screaming about squirrels having sex, but Dalton's Liberals seem to be closing their ears like studious geeks before a mid-term blocking out obnoxious roommates. The province is boosting......
