FILM: It seems rather shocking that up until 2008, the senior prom at Charleston High School in Mississippi was racially segregated, despite classes and other school activities being integrated. It wasn't until Morgan Freeman offered to foot the bill for the prom (for the second time, as he was denied the first time in 1997) that anyone in the town considered a racially integrated prom. Prom Night In Mississippi is a documentary by Toronto-based filmmaker Paul Saltzman that follows high school students, parents, and teachers as they navigate their way through senior prom preparations, highlighting the racism that is still evident in the community. All proceeds from tonight's opening night benefit screening will benefit Moving Beyond Prejudice, an organization that will distribute Prom Night in Mississippi's educational DVD package to Canadian schools that cannot afford them. Morgan Freeman will be in attendance for tonight's event, which will commence with a red carpet entrance, followed by an introduction by the filmmaker. Stick around after the screening for a Q&A session. Varsity Cinemas (55 Bloor Street West), 6:30–9:30 p.m., $100 (available online).

We’d only been at Gallery 1313 for a minute or two when a warbling voice cut across the din of the crowd.

ART: Tonight at Gallery 1313, fourteen designers' and artists' work will hit the runway in a fundraiser for the artist-run gallery. The show will also feature artist-designed t-shirts by talented Canadian artists like Michael DeForge and Daniel Erban. Funds raised will go towards ensuring Gallery 1313's ongoing programming and operations, since it's a not-for-profit organization. Gallery 1313 (1313 Queen Street West), 8–10 p.m., $15.

ART: Still looking for the perfect picture to fit into that eight-by-eight inch frame you got last Christmas? Head on down to the opening of the Love Show and pick up one of the many eight-by-eight inch pieces of art on sale, starting at $100. Proceeds go to a selection of youth outreach programs, so you can feel morally cleansed after making that crass joke about "something else eight-by-eight inches" that we've tastefully declined to print here, you filthy animals. Gallery 1313 (1313 Queen Street West), Opens tonight at 7 p.m. and runs until November 9, FREE.

THEATRE: Hart House Theatre's 2008–2009 season officially begins this evening with Shakespeare's King Lear, which runs until October 18. This production of the classic tragedy stars Peter Higginson as Lear and is directed by Jeremy Hutton. Hart House Theatre (7 Hart House Circle), 8 p.m., $12–$20.

WORDS: Zoocheck Canada founder Rob Laidlaw wants your kids to be as jaded as possible from an early age. To implement this idea, he's releasing Wild Animals in Captivity, a new non-fiction kids book that examines animal life in decidedly un-Disney-like settings. Laidlaw will be speaking to elementary students this morning at the Yorkdale Indigo (3401 Dufferin Street, 10 a.m., FREE). Later tonight, he's giving a lecture at the George Ignatieff Theatre called "The Bond Between Us: Reflections on the Human-Animal Relationship." Polar bear expert Else Poulsen and author Elizabeth Abbott will also be speaking at the event. All proceeds and book sales will go towards Zoocheck Canada. George Ignatieff Theatre (15 Devonshire Place), 7 p.m., $8.
