CRAFT: The Fox Theatre and girlcancreate.com are teaming up to present Movies and Makers: An Art and Craft Show, along with a screening of Faythe Levine’s Handmade Nation, a documentary about North America's DIY craft movement. The craft show will showcase the work of over thirty local artisans and vendors, including east-end craft proprietess Nathalie-Roze, textile printmakers Beside Herself, and Kensington printers Kid Icarus. With tons of clothing, pottery, zines, and jewellery, it’s the perfect place to get some holiday shopping done. Stick around after the show for the documentary screening, which will either leave you satisfied with your handmade purchases or feeling inspired to go home and make something yourself. FILM: John Hughes, a filmmaker best remembered for his iconic coming-of-age films of the 1980s, passed away last month, and to celebrate his life the Fox Theatre presents a mini marathon of some of Hughes' best work. The John Hughes Tribute will see five films written and directed by the late artist screened over three nights, starting with Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Weird Science tonight. The Breakfast Club and Pretty In Pink screen Wednesday, while Planes, Trains & Automobiles will round out the showcase on Thursday. FILM: Has digital killed film? Definitely not, says the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers (LIFT) with tonight’s screening of nine beautiful stop-motion, 16mm films. Afterward, two of the filmmakers, Jonathan Amitav and Chris Gehman, speak about the challenges and rewards of working with film. This event is the first part of a six-part series entitled Strategies of the Medium, supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and running until Spring 2010.
