MUSIC: After the devastating cancellation of their show in 2003 (remember that SARS thing?), Billy Joel and Elton John will finally bring their Face 2 Face Tour to the Air Canada Centre tonight. The piano men, who last graced our city with their communal presence in 1995, will blow minds this evening with inevitable renditions of "Piano Man," "Philadelphia Freedom," and "Crocodile Rock." Mr. Joel and Mr. John will be playing a second date this Saturday, in case you can't make it out tonight. Air Canada Centre (200 Bay Street), 7:30 p.m., $70–$275.50.

Empire building is not something you hear about in Canadian art. Ever. Until Friday night.

John Majhor with Elton JohnHe was best known to children of the eighties as the iconic host of Canada's first major daily music video show, CFMT's Video Singles in 1983, which pre-dated MuchMusic and led to the legendary Toronto Rocks program on CityTV (click here for a clip of the intro). Perched before multiple TV screens on a tiny set, John Majhor's loose style and low-fi production would foreshadow the oft-copied format that CityTV would make famous over the next two decades. Majhor quickly became a pin-up veejay in the mid-80s, along with his MuchMusic compatriot J.D. Roberts, while Flashdance-style Toronto Rocks! sweatshirts became ubiquitous across the city.

Torontoist has always been a sucker for piano pop. You should see us croon along to Elton John or Billy Joel.... but we think that sometimes it's best to leave piano pop to the professionals, people like Mike Evin.

2005_01_28heshe.gifIt's fairly commonplace to feel the sting of rejection after a break-up. We often ask ourselves painfully self-conscious questions like "Am I too fat?" or "Will I ever be happy?" and "Now who am I supposed to have sex with?"
