Reel Toronto: Last Night

Last Night is that rarest of birds. Not only is it unabashedly set in Toronto, it's good! Even people outside of Canada saw it! And liked it!

Edgar Wright on Getting Spaced Out at the Bloor

As has been discussed before, the Bloor has become a relevant location for the local community of film buffs, but to Torontoist it feels like it's never been as obvious as during the Edgar Wright–curated film season The Wright Stuff.

Really we were. Between the alcohol and the giddiness and the fact that we couldn't think of anything intelligent to ask him about his new movie, Coopers' Camera, we opted instead to snap a few photos from afar. And then when we finally did work up the nerve to approach him, he had just left, leaving us with memories of Homer and Mr. T.

No time…Must get back down to Harbourfront…IFOA in full swing…Here are some other literary events taking place this week….

A busy day for Torontoist yesterday, though no parties; though the Star! TV Shmooze was taking place. We didn’t hear any gossip about it, but it did rain. So we imagine the gossip would be something like… Famous celebrities got a bit wet.

We wish we liked Monkey Warfare, we really do. There’s few films that we’ve seen that are more indelibly stained with Toronto than this, with enough shots of Parkdale it’s almost like going for a bike ride around it yourself. Also, Don McKellar! We love that guy!

Those of you putting off watching Mean Girls until those exorbitant movie rental prices come down ($4?! Ridiculous!!) can breathe a sigh of relief. A hot, fire-haired, pre-bulimic sigh of relief.

What began in Toronto as a bachelor party gift, then a Fringe Festival production, then a Mirvish produced play several years ago, has turned into a Broadway hit! Leading the pack, it garnished thirteen Tony nominations, the most of any play this year. The New York Post even predicted it as the big winner.

TOist Ear EF sends us the following dispatch about Don McKellar's less than stellar ride -

The U of T Humanities Department's Voicing Toronto Conference is a mixture of lectures, screenings, performances and readings. Attempting to rope in six humanistic disciplines, they're offering something for everyone, or at least for anyone who lives in Toronto and enjoys the occasional foray into obscure local history. The film events include works by Don McKellar, Clement Virgo and David Cronenberg. The music component includes shows about Glenn Gould's Toronto and A Toronto Songbook. And the art component is a show that attempts to explore the idea of Toronto art. Also of note is a show of Toronto souvenirs, as curated by the MA Museum Studies students at the U of T. At least someone is saving all those misspelled 'I survived Sars' Tees for posterity.

- And for a bit of pop pap: Avril makes new friends, via GoldenFiddle.

What's more, we get a Monday Report shot of Margaret Atwood inventing the character of a hockey-husky authoress. If this doesn't convince the powers that be to bring back the NHL, TOist cannot fathom what will! So scary and so excellent. Who needs articles when you can just look at the pictures? The guiding philosophic principle of TOist's life.

But back to the nebbish and his feature film, , which opens tonight. McKellar plays an indie filmmaker paying the rent by chauffering a childstar round town, and in the process learning that he's more than just a pint-size revenue generator. McKellar will be at tonight's 9:45pm Carlton screening to chat up the film and all you nebbishy patrons.

may avenge the Oscar loss of its namesake character lo those many years ago.
