After reading today's ad, Torontoist is certain of one thing—modesty was not a key element of the "Yorkville style," especially when it came to attracting dancing queens and boogie kings looking for a place to strut their stuff. The neighbourhood had a cluster of disco floors waiting for John Travolta wannabes to demonstrate their dance skills and soak in the attitude. One might have been lucky enough to see celebrities like Sonny Bono indulge......

It has been one week since the inauguration of Crosstown, Toronto's newest underground (literally) dance spot. Formerly Healy's, and well before that, Bassmint, this fresh Queen and Bathurst club has gotten an exposed-brick and Edison-lightbulb makeover, adding to the raw, minimal feel of the place. Party people seem to recognize every calendar holiday, and who better to celebrate last night with than Detroit techno legend Derrick May? The man credited with helping invent the......

Musicians must really love our city; so many of them have made multiple trips to Toronto this year that there could be no other explanation. Or maybe they just like our money. Either way, Panic! At The Disco (P!ATD) brought their elaborate set and crew to the Ricoh Coliseum last night for the second time this year, not even six months after their first visit at the Molson Amphitheatre. As a person out of......

We're a little late with this week's music listing--blame the election! Er, okay, maybe someone just got immersed in learning a bit of Flash and let it slip. It won't happen again. If you're looking for some local flavour, you've got a few really good choices this week, including Melissa McClelland, Ohbijou, Elliott Brood, and the Great Lake Swimmers. All highly recommended, particularly Melissa--her voice is like honey. On the not-so-local side, Axl Rose......

Canadian rapper k-os has questionably hinted at a racist agenda at NOW Magazine after receiving a mediocre review. This week, NOW published a review of the new k-os album, "Atlantis: Hymns For Disco." Writer Jason Richards commented that the abundance of mainstream guests- including Sam Roberts and Buck 65 - "will only strengthen [k-os's] detractors' case that he's a crossover pop artist disguised as a true-school b-boy." Even so, Richards gave the album three N's......

As part of the University of Toronto's frosh week, the Students' Administrative Council hosted Metric and the Weakerthans on their back campus on Friday evening. Ignoring, for a moment, that Ryerson hosted Metric for their frosh week last year, that the band was delayed by an hour, seemed even grumpier than the increasingly impatient crowd when they arrived, played a short set, and didn't play an encore (met with audience shouts of "now I'm......

It could be the abundance of shows announced over the past few weeks or possibly the kickoff of the fall concert season in September that's lending to the sparse choice of live music this week, because there are some slim pickins to be had. Unless you love the Marleys, in which case you hit the motherload! If anyone has word on some super secret underground shows happening between now and next Sunday, feel free......

TOist finally dragged our sorry butt to the gym yesterday, and were rewarded for our trouble with the following exchange before yoga class: Woman 1: Iron Maiden. It's awesome to run to. Woman 2: I hate working out to dance music. Woman 1: And disco. Disco is for pussies.......

New night, new venue, and all kinds of pop - "Regional Hip-Hop, Mashups, Grime, 80s, Bubblegum, French, Funk, Dancehall, Reggaeton, Disco, Rock, Baile, Glitch." The DJs (Random Play and Big Primpin) request that you send them mixtapes and mashups, and TOist requests that you send us your definition of 'glitch' music. We don't get out much.......
