Power Ball Goes to Eleven

If you’ve ever considered that it might be a fun idea to invite the local roller-derby girls to your next party, Thursday at The Power Plant cleared up that misconception. That night, the eleventh annual Power Ball art party fundraiser at Harbourfront’s contemporary art gallery filled every space with interactive installations. This included some unfortunately unavoidable interactions with some very determined girls on roller skates—determined to be noticed, to be outrageous. Fortunately, their grit was unnecessary. Power Ball 11’s sheer saturation of art upon art in every corner was a reminder of why the event is worth attending.

Last Thursday, June 21, art and drink enthusiasts united in the back room of Mercer Union (37 Lisgar Street) where artist Dean Baldwin was serving drinks from the teensiest bar in the city. The installation was called Minibar, which did double duty as a performance piece and beverage catering for the opening night of the gallery's exhibition, Seducing Down The Door.

series from The Movement Movement. The main movers of The Movement Movement, dancer/choreographer Jenn Goodwin and artist/curator Jessica Rose, are inviting the public to run laps of the museum for public art’s sake. You could be running through Ancient Peru or perhaps Heaven or Hell. Sounds exotic! The upcoming run will be extra special as filmmaker Nick de Pencier will work with Lewis Kaye (soundster) and Dean Baldwin (photographer) to capture the run on film. The art of running through art will create art.

In the second of this series, we've picked another five "must see" events -- this time from Nuit Blanche's Zone B. All these activities are happening in and around the OCAD building. Unless specified, the events we've picked run for the full 12 hours, so you can visit them at any point in the night.
