ART: Andrea Stajan-Ferkul creates beautiful mixed-media paintings that are sleek and sexy on the surface and refined and evocative once you get to know them better. Many of the gowns she features on the canvas are also fit for the runway, which is appropriate given that one of her illustrations was used in the promotional material for Toronto Fashion Week shows at Nathan Phillips Square last week. Today, Stajan-Ferkul will open her solo show at the Art Square Gallery called "A Room With A View." The opening reception will be this Thursday at 6 p.m. Art Square Gallery (334 Dundas Street West), 5 p.m., FREE.

WORDS: As part of Freedom to Read Week, This Is Not A Reading Series is proudly presenting the Canadian launch of Michael Muhammad Knight's The Taqwacores, a controversial novel about the Muslim punk-rock movement. Knight will appear this evening in conversation with Montreal filmmaker Omar Majeed, whose still-in-progress documentary Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam will feature the real-life punk bands whose stories inspired Knight to write his novel. Advanced footage from the film will be shown at the event, and Knight will partake in an extended Q&A session with the audience. Gladstone Hotel Melody Bar (1214 Queen Street West), 7 p.m., $5 (free if you buy the book).

People interested in alien abductions generally fall into three categories: people who have been abducted by aliens, people who want to be abducted by aliens, and aliens who abduct people. The folks at action figure maker Happy Worker are teaming up with several Queen Street West merchants to bring all three groups together for a one-night Alien Abduction Festival after work this Thursday at Queen and Bathurst Streets.

We managed to see Cloverfield a few weeks ago, and with the release of Diary of the Dead (above) this week, we have to say it's rather timely to discuss our opinion of it. As tired as this quote is, there's really no better way to describe Cloverfield than to take from Macbeth's famous soliloquy: "Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

Every couple of weeks "What's The Frequency, Campus?" will highlight some of the intriguing shows and special programming happening on Toronto's campus and community radio stations.

Often considered one of Toronto's best sex stores, Come As You Are (701 Queen St. W) is throwing a 10th Anniversary Party on Thursday night. The worker owned and operated store will celebrate ten glorious years with prizes, "thank you gifts," a toonie bin, prizes and erotic pastries (we're hoping for breast cookies and penis eclairs).
