Shy Captain and the Nightlife of Tomorrow

Shortly after a series of shoot-outs and drug busts in Clubland last year, Councillor Adam Vaughan made a stout-hearted attempt to allay citizens’ fears: "There's a light at the end of the tunnel. And it's not a strobe light coming from the next club, but a better tomorrow."

The Road To Twestival

Erin Bury and Sarah Prevette have had a very long month. The two women were the chief organizers behind the Toronto version of Twestival benefiting charity: water, which builds wells in impoverished nations. The event, held last Thursday at CiRCA, included live video streaming of Twestival parties from around the world; a community fair that showcased organizations that were, according to Prevette, "harnessing social media for social good"; and three rooms for dancing, networking, and photograph-taking.

Playgrounds for the Future

Fact: All kids like playgrounds. Also a fact: Though it may seem to take forever, kids grow up. In just a few short years, innocent days of monkey bars and spiral slides turn into nights of double vodka-sodas and cocaine. Enter CiRCA―a virtual jungle gym for adults. So what happens if you put the real kids in the adult playground? Take a second to imagine―hundreds of unaffected kids partying in a playground stimulating enough to keep jaded adults entertained until the wee hours of the morning. It's like feeding a school-wide birthday party of five-year-olds two pounds of Cherry Blasters and a case of Red Bull and then turning on a strobe light. And since CiRCA's already chock-full of alien cartoon figures and futuristic dolls, it won't take much re-modeling to make it seem like something from another planet. At least, that's what we think the Bunch Family must have been thinking when they decided to organize a day of child's play at the oversized night club.

MUSIC: Toronto electro-punk-nintendo-beep-and-bloop duo Crystal Castles are sure to kick ass tonight at CiRCA (copyright infringement issues aside). These guys put on one hell of a show, and their hipness peak is probably approaching fast given that they've gone from performing in Parkdale to rocking the Harbourfront Centre and CiRCA in just eight months. So if you don't want to wait until next year to catch them opening for Kenny Rogers at Casino Niagara, you'd better head downtown this evening. CiRCA Nightclub (126 John Street), 10 p.m., $15.

SPORTS: The Toronto FC are playing FC Dallas this afternoon. The team's had a week to rest since their loss to Real Salt Lake last Monday, so hopefully a victory is in store. BMO Field (170 Princes' Boulevard), 4 p.m., $21–$85.

DANCE: German electrohouse duo Booka Shade returns to Toronto for what will undoubtedly be a sweaty, sweaty dance party at CiRCA tonight. Hey, remember when CiRCA first opened and everyone was being all “Yeah right, I'm never going to CiRCA!"? Looks like the joke is on you, if you're a Booka Shade fan. CiRCA (126 John Street), 10 p.m., $18.50.

It's May 24 long weekend, and you know what that means: clash of the mega-parties. On Sunday, the Guvernment complex will be hosting Freedom 08. Two-time DJ Mag anointed No. 1 DJ Paul Van Dyk will be rocking the Koolhaus. Electro lovers should not miss Chicago's Felix da Housecat and local favourite Nasty Nav spinning at The Drink. The Guvernment will feature house icons Bad Boy Bill and Erick Morillo. For people that prefer their dance music in the 160 to 180 bpm range, the Orange Room will feature some of the city's finest drum and bass talent.
