Sure, Toronto, you heart your bikes, but there are other cities just as cycle-centric as you are. Tonight at CineCycle, the Toronto Coalition for Active Transportation presents a screening of VEER, a critically approved documentary that examines Portland’s (at times) wacky bike culture and shows that for many, two wheels aren’t just a choice of transportation; they’re a way of life.

FILM: Filmmaker Edgar Wright, who's currently in town to direct Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, is taking Kevin Smith's initiative by curating a mini film-festival of his own at the Bloor Cinema. "The Wright Stuff" runs sporadically until April 12 and will screen Wright's favourite films (among them Shaolin Soccer, Drunken Master 2, and The Brood) alongside a few of Wright's own films. Being screened tonight in a double bill are Wright's 2004 zombie parody Shaun of the Dead and his 2007 crime-medy Hot Fuzz. Wright will stick around for a Q&A after the screenings. KIDS: Script Superheroes, a six-week writing workshop for seven- to ten-year-olds, starts today at the Comedy Bar. The afternoon workshops will teach your child how to write a powerful script, and how to impress an audience. At the end of the program, professional actors will step in to present a live reading of all the kids' plays. Script Superheroes is taught by character comedian Kristen McGregor and artist/writer/former Torontoist editor Alison Broverman. The Comedy Bar (945 Bloor Street West), 2:30–3:45 p.m., $100/6 sessions.

ART: "Off Camera" is an exhibition at the new Filmport Studios, featuring more than 200 works from 50 artists currently working in the Toronto film industry. The reception tonight will include musical performances and a silent auction, and did we mention you get to go inside Filmport Studios? WORDS: Chris Carlsson, one of the founders of Critical Mass and the author of 2008's Nowtopia, is speaking this evening at CineCycle as part of Pages' This Is Not A Reading Series. He'll be discussing Nowtopia, which researches social challenges faced by outlaw bicyclists and others looking to get away from urban consumer lifestyles. Spacing's publisher and creative director Matthew Blackett will be interviewing Carlsson, and there will be an audience Q&A following the interview. WORDS: Join the Toronto Cyclists Union at CineCycle tonight for the launch party of Dandyhorse, a new Toronto-based urban cycling magazine. The magazine will feature articles about commuting, advocacy, couriers, safety, fashion, and anything else related to bikes, and the party will have DJs, a cash bar, cake, and—of course—lots of brand new magazines.
