"Next stop, Quarter Pounder" is something you could be hearing on the subway in the future, as City Council agrees to look at selling station naming rights to corporations. However, TTC vice-chair Joe Mihevc calls the study a "waste of time" and says the idea should be rejected, presumably because he's polled all 1.5 million riders and knows that they'd rather pay higher fares than suffer the indignity of a subway stop named after a basketball shoe instead of a 19th century Brit. Say, what if they sold the naming rights to Subway? Everybody wins!

While going to York University may seem like a giant hassle (Torontoist recommends you pack a snack for the trip), this year’s Ioan Davies Memorial Lecture is shaping up to be worth the drive or TTC ride to York.
With Toronto in the midst of a nasty heat wave, this cooler beckoning walkers-by in Yorkville with "Free Water" seemed like a desert mirage. But sure enough, the lid pulled back to reveal perfectly-chilled bottled water care of The Body Clinic, a high-end spa and salon.
Torontoist has been saying for years that City Council provides better bang for your buck than any other piece of live entertainment in this city. At absolutely no cost (unless you count, you know, taxes), you can attend this extravaganza that combines the spectacle and epic scale of a mega-musical with the manic energy of a really good Fringe show.
Study finds that Ontario children's group homes are like jails. Managers of group homes dismissed charges that their homes were Dickensian by pointing out that their children are not highly skilled pickpockets. Yet.
Ottawa denies entrance to Nelson Mandela's wife. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was supposed to give a speech at a fundraiser gala last night, but was told that she was denied a visa because she had been previously convicted of kidnapping and fraud. The fact that she was allowed in the United States three weeks ago means nothing. Come on, the U.S. never lets anyone in!
After a day wherein people arriving at Pearson International Airport had to throw away their bottled water and coffee before being allowed on their flights because of an alleged British-born bomb plot, this incredibly crucial update was released just before midnight, and flashed on Pulse24's screen throughout the day:
Japan will get a dose of Cancontent this weekend, when Broken Social Scene, The Dears, Stars, Death from Above 1979 and Metric drop in on Osaka and Toykyo for a mini-tour called "Canada Wet." Why is the tour called Canada Wet? We cannot tell you. Perhaps Emily Haines plans to throw out a case of bottled water, in keeping with her behaviour at the Mod Club show, when a crowd-pacifying maneuver was required. Wet or dry, the concert is a hard-slogged venture, come to fruition thanks to Nori Tsuzuki, a Japanese music promoter who has been trying to get such a show on since participating in a CMW panel in 2004. From Jam Canoe:
"We were confident that the market was ready for the name of 'Canada' and have decided to use the name everywhere to prove our vision. We feel that the people in the industry was not ready to use the name 'Canada,' but not the audience. With all the incredible buzz going on with Canada Wet, we think we have successfully changed the image of Canada and Canadian music in our market."
