SHOCKING CONFESSIONS FROM SUN SLAUGHTERER

Subtlety is not something that the Toronto Sun does particularly well, so it's only fitting that a blog devoted to ruthlessly criticizing them on a day-to-day basis is called, well, Toronto Sun Sucks.

Joe Clark Launches A Library Blog With A Due Date

Local gadfly Joe Clark is well known for his thoroughly biting analyses of typography, the idiosyncrasies of Canadian spelling, and the TTC. But while we at Torontoist are more than happy with his generally curmudgeonly demeanour, Clark has decided to shake things up a bit and, in his own words, "work on a positive and uplifting project for a while." So with that aim in mind, Clark last week launched a new blog that zones in on another of his municipal loves, simply titled Fans of Toronto Public Library (a.k.a. TPLFans).

Dishing It

Seven months after axing Chatto's Digest (not to mention all their other blogs), Toronto Life has launched a new food blog. Daily Dish promises to "[serve] up the latest gossip from the city's restaurant scene, from openings and closings to celeb-sightings and food trends." As Online Editor Matthew Fox explains in the blog's inaugural post:

NOW is getting set to launch its new blog, NOW Daily, this week. Edited by former Torontoist editor/curmudgeon Josh Errett, it's promising "daily album reviews, a stable of online-only columnists, stage and live music recaps, breaking news and interviews. And, what with the wonders of the World Wide Web, a healthy amount of content will be interactive, like map mash-ups and reader reviews, and also multimedia, like playlists, podcasts and videos." About time. And also: yay! Errett writes: "I sincerely hope you find our new section, as well as the rest of the site, both usable and well-presented." We'll believe that when we see it.

Well, that didn't take long: Toronto Life has pulled the plug on Philip Preville's City State blog, on James Chatto's Chatto's Digest, and probably on Doug Bell's Spectator, too. Chatto was gone as of June 19, and today Preville wrote a post on City State that first read (in our RSS reader, at least) that "City State is being discontinued as of this post, as is its sister blog, Doug Bell’s wonderfully amusing Spectator, so go say your farewells over there, too"—but that now makes no mention of Spectator. Preville goes out with a plea for humour from our city and our mayor (and a slight dig at Spacing), a grumpy-guss complaint about construction on his street, and a plea for Kyle Rae to become mayor. Alright, then.

Amid all the cute overloading our recent Internet history, all the LOLcatz and YouTube Charlies, we began to feel that something very important was missing. We just couldn't figure out what it was. Did we need more plush? More anime? More stuff on our cats?

Jeremy Bell and Jessica Lax are just like your average young married couple, but with about ten-times the ambition. What started out as a simple plan of buying a new house in which to raise a family has ballooned into a large-scale building project—and they want you along for the whole thing by following their magnificent blog.

Well, it's that time of year again: time to hate the TTC! This time, it's the threat of a distant strike and the Star's devotion of its usually excellent Fixer feature to all things TTC (and broken) leading the charge. When Eye's Dale Duncan recapped the past week, she remarked: "Maybe it’s just me, but rage against the TTC seems to be growing."

There is certainly no point (or much truth) in saying that a woman should not care how she looks. But do we really need more women who are sassy, political and outspoken devoting their energy to a topic that exerts tremendous negative pressure on all women? After all, women already have more than their share of media targeted to their insecurities. It's unfortunate to see someone with real depth and courage adding to the pile, no matter how earnestly she is going about it.

blogUT has stepped into the crowded Toronto blogosphere (blogaverse? blorld? blearth?) to fill an as of yet uncovered niche: everything about the University of Toronto.

Dose is live! We know you've been losing sleep waiting for the new freebie daily, thanks to those sinuously-shaped boxes with the mysterious 'coming 04.04.05.' on them. But now ye fresh newsprint is here. The publishers making nothing short of the bold claim that "April 4th is the day your life will change." We don't see how the latest news on Kirsten Dunst and Jake Gyllenhaal is going to change our life, but you never know. Maybe they want to give TOist their dog Atticus.

Big news for medium sized city blogs: Torontoist, BlogTO and Better Living Centre all got mention in this week's eye! The extensive article cites the trend of emerging Toronto city blogs, asking "Is a blog still a blog if it becomes your career?" Writer Dave Morris goes on to comment on Torontoist site traffic and our post about Kara Lang and the Lady Lynx. But for all the comprehensiveness of the article, Torontoist is left to wonder where sites like Chromewaves, Toronto.1051am or Zoilus fit in if not in the category of "Toronto's Top City Blogs." Also, is a blog still a blog if it becomes a career? Can we ever be sure?

Just when you got in the habit of writing 2004 on your rent cheques, it’s all about to change. A new year of gadgets and tech advances is upon us. 2004 was the year tech went cool. The family geek, once the outcast, became the gify consultant, dispensed software recommendations and set up your printer. Electronics were the hit of the Christmas shopping season. In 2004, you didn’t give a date your phone number, you gave them your URL.
