Gossip Folks, by Lauren White AKA Raymi the Minx

For you cave dwellers, 26-year-old Toronto "blogebrity" (who even says that?) Lauren White has been running her widely read personal blog since "before you even knew how to attach a photo in email" (says her Twitter). From the time she was seventeen, she's been amassing a mega intense army of followers—and just as intense army of haters—by chronicling the minutiae of her everyday life like it was her job. For those who follow along, it's easy to feel like her biographer with all the needless details you absorb (didja know she’s related to Jack Kerouac?) and all the scene-y events you notice her at (where you pretend not to recognize her then check her blog the next day to see if you were in any of her photos). For others, it’s impossible to pinpoint the blog's appeal, aside from the voyeurism it provides with little to no censorship. But love or hate her, when was the last time you broke up with your boyfriend only to have it covered by everyone from Eye Weekly (Kate Carraway, natch) to the Globe and Mail (with mandatory quote from subculture profiteer Hal Niedzviecki)? That's the bizarro situation Raymi has found herself in (culminating in the Globe writer writing about it again to fend off threats of flaming dog shit from her loyal kingdom). Rather than us add to the weird discourse about someone so "uninteresting" that everyone keeps fricking writing about her, we thought we'd let her respond.

What happens when your poor-listener girlfriend forgets that you're backpacking around Europe for two weeks with no access to your mobile phone or the internet?

The Too-Explicit Injustice of Kind Population! is: a) a popular Engrish t-shirt slogan in Tokyo b) a Sufjan Stevens hidden track c) the title of this month's photo blog show at the Whippersnapper Gallery If you guessed "c," many hand claps and cheers! You've just won yourself admission* to the opening reception of this must-see exhibition featuring Toronto's top photo bloggers: Sam Javanrouh, Chris Altorf and Jessica Hayes, Adam Hool, and Rannie Turingan. The...

On Sunday afternoon, over 150 independent publishers, writers, artists and bloggers from across the continent will pack Toronto’s Gladstone Hotel for Canzine, Canada’s largest celebration of small press publishing and alternative culture.

The Toronto Star published a good article Sunday revealing that "the city's Waterfront Secretariat is now reviewing the recommendations and cost estimates of recent waterfront task forces on the fate of the Gardiner." Torontoist hears you asking, wasn't this the whole point of the Gardiner Report released last September? Now that the city has all but canned plans to tear down the elevated highway due to lack of funds, however, discussions are focussing on how to make the best of what we're stuck with.

A soccer game between Toronto and Los Angeles was played last night in honour of the Becks-Posh royal visit to Toronto. Although an injury prevented Beckham from taking the field, his handsomeness remains unimpaired. And oh yeah, the final score was 0–0.

Indie popsters Stars will be shooting a new video in Toronto tomorrow and Thursday and they want you to be in it. If you missed the Joel Plaskett shoot we told you about earlier this year, you've got another shot at your 15 minutes of fame (or at least becoming known among your acquaintances as "the one who was in a music video"). Aspiring extras should send photos and contact info to extras@blinkpictures.com for their chance to hobnob with Stars.

With all that went down this week, we thought we thought we'd cheer everyone up by giving everyone a double dose of dogs.

We here in the Ist-A-Verse know that we're sensational, but it's very rare that we get a chance to be sensationalistic. This week, we've decided to have ourselves a little fun and try our hand at tacky tabloid headlines, using nothing more than our favorite posts from this week.

Though you’ll have to hold your herrerasaurs for the long-awaited (and belated) revamping of the Royal Ontario Museum, this weekend the ROM opened a new exhibition on the ancient Peruvian Sicán culture. Ancient Peru Unearthed: Golden Treasures of a Lost Civilization explores the lesser known pre-Incan society via artefacts from a recent major dig at the Batán Grande archaeological site.

Spring appears to have, er, sprung, at least temporarily, in most of the Ist-A-Verse, so naturally, we're all feeling pretty good. (Yes, we know that spring doesn't start till later this month. Just let us enjoy our weather!) And that makes us that much more eager to share all of the nifty things we're up to...

A podcast, in case you didn't know yet, is a downloadable audio or video file, often syndicated through blogs. On February 24 and 25, everyone from podcast amateurs to connoisseurs are welcome to participate in the "unconference" held at Ryerson University. It's fully volunteer operated, and therefore free. All you have to do to join is add your name and information to the wiki and just show up. Not only can anyone attend the seminars and workshops, but anyone can lead one. Among the 35 sessions that will be offered are "Podcast 101," "How to Get 2,427 People to Podcast for a Common Cause," and "Live Interactive Podcasting." You just might learn how to host your own personal "radio show" or how to fund your podcasts with A/V advertisements. The schedule for the weekend is available here.

Valentine's Day is only a few days away, and we here across the Gothamist network would like to tell you, in the spirit of the holiday, just how much we love you, our readers. Don't let it get to your heads, though. There are plenty of things we love, you included. Just be glad you're not amongst the things we hate.

Austinist was in a musical frame of mind as they listened to the new Shins album, updated the SXSW band listings and got called "punk rock" for their efforts by MTV. And an ice storm swept through the area.

You can't throw a brick without hitting a blogger who has an opinion on CBC's new show, was that it made a great excuse for the CBC to give away lots of shawarma. (In the presence of camels, of course. Because you can't spell "shawarma" without "camels.")

Halloween is Tuesday, which means this weekend is really the time for all of the –ists to celebrate. And whether they’re designing super-spooky costumes or talking about the super-spooky upcoming elections, we’d say that they’re doing a fine job of it.

These 45 seats might be empty now but come November 13 we'll get to help decide who should fill them. Yes, the municipal elections are upon us. So where should those addicted to municipal politics go for their online fix?

We just wanted to wish all of you bloggers out there a happy Catmas. Joey DeVilla seems to be the strongest local proponent of the silly "holiday" where bloggers post pictures of their cats (sorry dog-owning bloggers). In that spirit Torontoist provides you a link to the Toronto Cat Rescue, so next year you can have a very special Catmas with a feline friend of your own.

For the first time ever, blogs were invited to come to the announcement of the Stratford Festival's new season, and Torontoist was there, chillin' like a villain. The press conference was held at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art for some reason, upstairs where the swanky new Jamie Kennedy restaurant is (free breakfast for bloggers!). The press release for the event issued the following warning: "Needless to say, in addition to announcing the 2007 playbill and honoring Richard Monette, their departing artistic director, a major announcement will be made." Apparently, however, this was all a ruse as the only thing announced were the plays that will make up the 2007 theatrical season and the long-known departure of incumbent artistic director Monette. What was the "major announcement" meant to be? Read on.

No, we're not referring to ourselves in the third person. We are referring to our New York City overlords at Gothamist. Business Week has picked Jake Dobkin and Jen Chung at that fine blog in a slideshow of their (your?) favourite bloggers. We gotta say, our bosses are hot.

What, it's over? Filmmakers, fans, industry people and most of all bloggers are in shock that this year's TIFF is coming to an end.

Bloggers, festivalgoers, volunteers and Yorkville shopkeepers can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but there's still plenty of fest left.

Tonight, the Horseshoe Tavern plays host to the Pitchfork/Secretly Canadian Indie Rock Triple-Header. This is a chance to see three awesome bands you've probably never heard of... but who everyone will be talking about in a few months. If you want to get ahead of the curve, read on.

Canadian films don't make money. It's almost a certainty in the Canadian film industry but once in a while a film comes along that gives us hope. This year Fido, just might be that film. Our glowing review is here and other bloggers agree that the zombie comedy (zombedy?) about a '50s community where zombies are pets was the right choice to open the Canada First series.

A nutty UCLA prof assigned actors in his graduate level acting class to read and act out blog entries.

Mayor Miller and Toronto get it right according to Vanity Fair, he gets it so right that the mag saw fit to include him in their Green Issue portfolio. He shares the page with the mayors of San Francisco, Seattle, Baltimore, Chicago and Miami. The spread also means that Miller shares the pages of VF with celebrities like Edward Norton, Bette Midler and cover boys and girls George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

Seattlest saw a house party get senselessly attacked with a shotgun and end in seven dead. A local senator is debated and their version of the big dig is investigated. To truly get to the bottom of it they interview the writer Jonathan Raban.

Copyright isn't exactly a sexy topic, there's no blood, no one dies, there are no burnt out houses or flooded streets to get people riled up. Or is it? Bloggers were able to get a lot of people angry over Sam Bulte when she apparently cozied up to record industry bigwigs at a Drake Hotel fundraiser. And with the Junos (or the Canadian Idol reunion) coming up and the RIAA going crazy down south there's a lot at stake with copyright. And with all those musicians crying poor maybe it is sexier than we thought.
