Festival fever is sweeping the city—after all, it’s that time of year. But, perhaps incredibly, there are people for whom Brad Pitt sightings and red carpet galas just aren’t worth the Ben Mulroney-sized hype. One of the best numbers in LOTR: The Musical: The Musical! is "The Nerds Will Come," and describes the producer's faith that the much-maligned Middle Earth musical mishmash would succeed, regardless of the attention of traditional theatre-goers because of the geek dollar. Ironically, the success of this very amusing show will likely also rest on the same principle.
What would Canadian Idol be without the genial, excitable, preternaturally tanned Ben Mulroney as host? Would the CTV karaoke juggernaut be any different with another host, perhaps one wearing a black tee, a nose ring and an equally expensive, but far more tousled, haircut? What if George Stroumboulopoulos was running the show?
According to the website for the 79th Annual Academy Awards, it's only one day and four hours until this year's ceremony— and yes, Torontoist is that excited. Not only will we be watching, we'll be liveblogging the event, as we did for the 2006 civic elections. Think of it as a written audio commentary, tailor-made for Torontonians.

At least that's one plausible showdown if TO's media choose to pick up the gauntlet thrown down by the CTV CanIdol machine. Tired of all the talking head hot air, CTV is asking those press persons who think it's easy to croon badly before millions of Canadians (and then watch your album tank, and then appear as an extra in a low budget Canflick starring a talking beaver) vie for the title 'Media Idol' in the Toronto Media Idol Change. So far CFTO entertainment reporter Jacintha Wesselingh and CHUM FM's Meg Tucker have signed up, but whose representing the ink slingers? TOist would like to see Robert Fulford up there, or perhaps John MacFarlane and Liam Lacey dueting.
