12April07_newsroundup.jpgKurt Vonnegut dies at 84. However, that is only the perception of those of us who remain stuck in time and narrative space, and what has really happened is that he has traveled into an alternative universe to relive his own life. And so it goes.

Each weekday for the next two weeks, Torontoist is facing off local memes and blog drama in a tournament-style ladder and you, the reader, decide the outcome. View the full ladder here. Some highlights from Saturday's matches: 416 trounces 905 (95-12): In perhaps the most dramatic victory of the evening, the Toronto area code showed up the surrounding suburbs in a true show of telecommunications muscle. Miller's Hair buries Zombie Walks (59-47): The closest match, with the mayor's seemingly flawless haircut against the undead, Miller's golden wave came out on top. Only time will tell whether it can compete against the major league Layton's mustache. Today's matches, Region II, 1st Round:

The Annex vs. Skunks
Island Airport vs. Belinda Stronach
Leafs Fans vs. The Club District
Rob Ford vs. Bike Lanes
Street Meat vs. Taste of the Danforth
Turnitin.com vs. Jane Pitfield
Nuit Blanche vs. TIFF
Crack vs. Kensington Market
Polls after the jump.

Every week (or so), two Torontoist staffers square off to debate an issue that's important to our city. We invite our readers to join the debate in the comments section following the post.

Council is dealing with the fallout of the landfill deal. The Star found data that the city could've bought land at the Green Lane landfill site for much cheaper last year but did nothing. Jane Pitfield realises a day after the vote that she voted the wrong way and ended up supporting the mayor.

Tie Domi, the long-time Leafs enforcer turned social butterfly, who was seen at the One X One gala and is rumoured to be dating Belinda Stronach, has just announced his retirement.

From their no-doubt hilarious training centre,Second City launched a new bunch of comic hacks into the world yesterday with Da Tory Code, their inaugural comedy writers showcase. With a healthy balance of political debate and general Canadian hosery, the players joked about Osama becoming a Scientologist, used five-pin bowling and Korn to describe electoral reform and sang the praises of the Terry Schiavo diet (too soon?).

Is that Belinda Stronach on those new TTC promos? Probably just a sister or first cousin. Still, think of how impressive would that look on a resume: Magna CEO to the Official Opposition to Liberal cabinet minister back to the opposition then to the 88 South Leaside Thorncliffe via Wicksteed route.

A couple interesting flip-flops in the new government today - namely a crossing of the floor and an unelected senator and Minister of Public Works and Government Service.

1. Rona Ambrose, Conservative, Edmonton Spruce-Grove

Belinda, the Good Minister of the Government Side, killed off her wicked counterpart when she rode her broomstick across the floor last spring. And what a breathetaking view it was to watch her do it! With her mix of power and finesse, Ms Stronach could even be inspiration for a new hip-hop dance move entitled "Cross the Floor." It would go something like this: First, perfect a finishing school strut across the dance floor (or a walk in place), making sure to stop to the beat. Then, keeping with the rhythm, wave goodbye to Vic Toews with your right hand and hello to Ujjal Dosanjh with your left hand -- all the while chanting, "Cross the floor / cross that floor baby / cross the floor!" (To the tune of Missy Elliot's "Pass that Dutch").

Around the time Belinda Stronach kartwheeled over to the Liberals, former eye Editor Bert Archer was noting the lack of attractiveness of our current crop of MP's. Although Torontoist was vocal in our objections to the exclusivitey of the Archer list, we did notice a similarly shallow pool of honeys in the Hill Times Sexiest MP's poll. But now that it's summer, and the ties are loosened and underwear left in the top drawer, Torontoist re-assesses the hotness of both our male and female federal representatives in this week's Ist List.

But word from various Conservative insiders is that Stronach's tiger-like ruthlessness got the better of Mr Mackay, who is now nursing a fractured party and broken heart. So the Stronach-MacKay coalition is over - expect other Conservative MP's to take sides.

Shyness is nice, and shyness can stop you, from doing all the things in life you'd like to. Just ask Peter Mackay. After he was named Sexiest Male MP for the last six years straight by political pundits at the Hill Times, his professional career took off and his love life has never been better. He's now dating power-suit pussycat Belinda Stronach, and most recently played a key role in covering up Conservative discontent at the last convention in Montreal. Now, in his unprecedented seventh straight year, the Hill Times has named Mackay the Sexiest Male Member of Parliament.
