Fauxreel's pairing with Vespa to produce street art ads has always been contentious; as Carl Wilson pointed out in last month's Toronto Life, the intersection of street art and money-making is messy as hell. While one Toronto tagger took matters into their own hands to protest the corporate backing, and one Toronto book store threw their ad on top of Vespa's, others have participated in the discussion by literally changing the subject: a Montreal......

Last night's town hall meeting was an auspicious birth ceremony for the week-old Department of Culture. Speaker Naomi Klein termed it a “movement moment” and member Darren O'Donnell could only say “Holy fuck!” to the attendance, as more than triple the expected number of people crowded into the AC-less Theatre Centre. Leaflets were used by every member of the crowd to cool themselves while community leaders stirred existing anger at the Harper government. “You......

The Globe says at least $40 million of it is going to "2010 Olympic and Paralympic torch relays; the Road to Excellence program, which supports Summer Olympics athletes; and the Action Plan for Official Languages, which promotes bilingualism." Spacing reports on the fate of the Hug Me tree at Queen Street West and Peter Street after it was found knocked down yesterday. After narrowly avoiding being hacked up by the City's Forestry department, the tree is back—intact—in the hands of Elicser, the artist who had been painting it for the past few years, thanks in part to a woman whose husband proposed to her in front of the tree six years ago.......

People are scamming the city's parking machines to the tune of $1 million per year. Apparently you can use an expired pre-paid credit card to park for free because the machines don't check to see if the cards have credit left on them. The Toronto Parking Authority has known about this since 1998, but hasn't done anything because what the hell—it's only money. Federal industry minister Jim Prentice isn't happy about cellular companies charging......

Comic book panels bursting with rippling muscles and bulging breasts, a guaranteed sight at this weekend's Toronto Comicon (at the Holiday Inn, 377 King Street West), might be more than a Captain Underpants–obsessed kid normally sees. In an attempt to cater to older fans with children—and nurture a new generation of DC-obsessives—this year’s Comicon will feature a Comics for Kids area for children under 12 (who, consequently, can attend free with an adult). Posterchild has taken a brief respite from making wonderful street art (did you see his latest guerilla gardening boxes?) to make...dolls?! Yes, Post—long obsessed with the astronaut/space travel motif—made himself a dead astronaut costume at the end of 2006 and has since put up some pieces wearing it. Now, with the help of his mom (who taught him to sew) and his ex-girlfriend (who gave him a sewing machine), he's "adapted and shrunken his suit......

Photo by Dimsumdarren from the Torontoist Flickr Pool. A long-running question on Torontoist asks when graffiti can be tolerated. The sticking point isn't whether graffiti artists occasionally produce good art. Toronto's best-known piece of graffiti—a rainbow painted on a tunnel by the Don Valley Parkway—inspired Peter Doig's painting, "Country Rock," which in turn became the cover piece for an acclaimed exhibition in London. Worldwide, consider these murals, three-dimensional chalk drawings, and dirty window art.......

The art world is abuzz with eco-friendly, small-footprint art. From Santa Fe to our own little urban oasis, enviro-art is where it's at. One such green group at the fore is Ecotecture, a charitable organization working out of the Deleon White Gallery space (the gallery that brought you crazy films and Microsoft fantasies). Ecotecture's mandate states that they "offer a public forum to those working through questions of sustainability and facilitate the exhibition of......
