Pearson Airport reduces landing fees. The move was cheered by airlines, who can now drop their prices accordingly. Oh, wait, they won't do that, they'll only drop their prices by maybe about ten percent of what they could with the savings, and pocket the rest. Capitalism works! Stéphane Dion says Canadians don't want another election right now; thus, the Liberals won't challenge the throne speech. More accurately, the Liberals don't want another election right......

It's time to vote again on who's been a good dog and who's been a bad dog this year. The Pug Awards are back with their third annual crop of architecture, and if there's anything that Torontonians like to do, it's bitch and judge. And I say that with endearment. That's why I'm gonna trash the Pug website in a sec. We absolutely love the Pug (formerly Pugly) Awards, because it's not only a criticism......

So there we were, all ready to write another post previewing the final weekend of the Sprockets International Film Festival for Children, when we realised that the film we wanted to bring everyone’s attention to, When the Show Tent Came To My Town, had already had all of its showings! Darn. So though we aren’t going to do a full review of the film, we’d just like to note that When the Show Tent Came......

Call it cultural tourism, voyeurism, a geek fest, call it what you will. But when we heard that I Maid Cafe—a Cosplay restaurant—had opened up in Scarborough last December, we knew we would be taking the trip to Kennedy and Finch very soon. For those who don’t delight in Japanese pop culture, “cosplay” is short for costume play. It started with kids getting dressed up as their favourite anime characters, which, if you’ve ever been......

We already mentioned it in our news round-up but we thought we’d share with you this lovely picture of the assembled filmmakers and cast of Canada’s Top Ten films of 2006. Held at the Revival nightclub on College St. (as last year) By the Toronto International Film Festival Group, the event was hosted by Sylvie Moreau and, (yes!) Dave Foley, who were actually excellent hosts that seemed to have a good understanding of the......

Gerrard Street just east of Carlaw is a poor part of town that can get a bit scrappy. But it sports the only mall for blocks in every direction, Gerrard Square, which was for years know as "the Scare." Now the Scare has gone upmarket, bringing in the usual cast of box stores and big franchises with more to come. The GS website claims, "Riverdale is changing and at its heart is Gerrard Square, a......

Torontoist, recently, has been living in the early 70’s. Or at least it feels like it. Having only just read Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72 we wonder if the American electorate will be doomed to make the same mistakes forever, and having had the chance to see some of the films from Cinematheque Ontario’s frankly timely season, Inextinguishable Fire: The Vietnam War, well, we wonder if America in general......

Ahem. Yes, this week there are other films out than that film that we refuse to name in this post because we’re covering it enough already. There are plenty of other options, folks. Your first choice should be, because you are a PATRIOT, something Canadian (natch). And we have to say when Torontoist first saw the trailer for Bon Cop Bad Cop, a two fish swapping water buddy cop flick set in both Ontario......

At Friday night's City Idol event, Torontoist's own contestant recited a poem by Denis Lee titled, simply "Spadina." The poem, from Lee's (sadly out of print) 1974 Nicholas Knock and Other Peopleis a jaunty celebration of the success of the Stop Spadina Campaign that is being fondly remembered in the wake of Jane Jacobs' death. The poem goes: Sparrows sniffed the air, and hung Like humming-birds with bubble gum Doing pushups in the sun......

Every other Sunday night at the Drake Underground, David Shore hosts the always awesomely hilarious Monkey Toast, an improvised talk show. Each week he interviews a different guest - anyone from Nash the Slash to Quirks and Quarks' Bob MacDonald - and a troupe of six of the city's best improvisors do comedy based on the interview. The next Monkey Toast takes place on Sunday (April 30th) at 8pm, with Sean Cullen as David's guest.......

TOist correspondant Ann, with her sharp ears and magnet for insanity, overheard the following at Todmorden Mills this weekend: Frustrated mother of 3 boys: Boys! Stop that! What if you break all this art? Do you want to pay for it? I can't pay for it! That lady will make you work here until you're 40! And I can't stop her! The same woman later on, trying to get her 4 year old son......
