Allan King, 1930–2009

Watching an Allan King film is like being uncomfortably trapped inside a series of someone else's highly personal moments. Devoid of narration, his documentaries often feature long, uninterrupted takes of critical human events, but never with any whiff of sensationalism.

ENVIRONMENT: Change is in the air. Toronto Hydro is hosting a public meeting to discuss the testing stage [PDF] of its proposed Lake Ontario off-shore wind project. The Toronto Environmental Alliance is asking for a show of support at the meeting from Torontonians who want clean energy driving their laptops, Wiis, and future electric cars, as there is opposition to even this early research stage. In what we would consider a bit of a surprise, Stephen Frears' The Queen has swept the Toronto Film Critics Association awards, winning Best Picture, and picking up three other awards (and even sharing another). Helen Mirren won as Best Actress for playing Queen Elizabeth II; Michael Sheen won Best Supporting Actor for Tony Blair (who he looks basically exactly like and has played before, so that’s a bit of a cheat); Peter Morgan won the Best Screenplay Award for writing The Queen; and Stephen Frears shared the Best Director prize with brothers Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne for their drama L’Enfant.
