A reworked version of Beaumarchais' play makes for an uneven production, on now at Soulpepper Theatre.

In 1996, Theatre Columbus premiered playwright Michael O’Brien’s “freely adapted” take on the famous Beaumarchais play The Barber of Seville, which was written in 1775. O’Brien’s version mixed in music from the 1816 opera of the same name by Gioachino Rossini, as well as original tunes by composer John Millard. The adaptation also propelled the story forward a couple centuries, with pop culture references galore. With Theatre Columbus co-founder Leah Cherniak at the helm, the musical ended the season with six Dora Award nominations (it won three) and plenty of critical acclaim.

Seventeen years later, Soulpepper Theatre is remounting this zany reimagination of The Barber of Seville, updated once again by O’Brien, Millard, and Cherniak. But, for some reason—the change in decade, or company, or sense of humour—whatever had made the original so magical, has faded, save for a few key performances.

A historic tour rolls into town this Wednesday, as Jay-Z and Mary J Blige bring their Heart of the City co-venture to the ACC. Since 1996, Jigga has released ten studio albums, two collaborations with R. Kelly, a mash-up album with Linkin Park, and an MTV Unplugged with The Roots. He also managed to squeeze in a three-year retirement, during which he served as Def Jam president. When no major labels would sign him, he gained his indie cred by starting Roc-A-Fella Records. Part owner of the New Jersey Nets, dubbed the CEO of Hip-Hop, dating the hottest chick in the game, and tied with Elvis as the artist with the second most Number One albums in music history, it’s safe to say that Jay-Z is the man. From a critical and commercial perspective, the only other music artist in his league in terms of consistency and impact is Radiohead. He’ll be joined by the Queen of R&B and Hip-Hop, Mary J Blige. In addition to doing solo sets, the two will do a shared set. If it’s half as good as their Unplugged performance, this show will be a classic.
Speaking of The Roots, the Philadelphia band will be playing at the Koolhaus on Sunday. The perennially critically acclaimed group will be releasing their tenth album, Rising Down, in April. Its first single, “Birthday Girl,” features Fall Out Boy singer Patrick Stump on the hook, and is undeniably poppy. Perhaps to downplay any sell-out talk, the group has also released a video for “Get Busy” which is much harder. Regardless of how you feel about the new tracks, The Roots have cemented their reputation as a guaranteed great show.
One of the biggest local successes in recent years has been Crystal Castles. The duo with the eight-bit beats have been called “the most exciting and original band in the world right now.” Their self-titled debut was released a couple of weeks ago. They’ll be headlining Randomland at CiRCA on Friday. Judging from this performance at the Rough Trade store, the show will be ferocious.
Although G-Unit DJ DJ Whoo Kid has been dominating the East coast mix tape game these past few years, this night belongs to legendary producer DJ Premier. In addition to his work as one half of Gangstarr, Primo shaped the sound of 1990s New York gangsta rap by lacing tracks for Nas, Biggie, and Jay-Z. When he’s not supplying Christina Aguilera with horn inflected beats, Primo continues to work with up and coming rappers like Termanology.
For people who find drum and bass too clean, Breakcore Elimination 3 is the event for you. This genre has produced a semi-star in Winnipeg’s Venetian Snares but is also dealing with the controversy of whether it’s too diverse to constitute the label “breakcore.” Ponder the existential nature of music labels and get your dance on this Saturday at Concorde Cafe.
There’s something ironic about having to wait in line outside on a windy night to get into an event celebrating Mardi Gras, but that will be the scene outside Guvernment on Saturday night. The massive party will feature sets from England’s D. Ramirez and local favourites Sydney Blu, Manzone & Strong, and others. Shake your rump before those ashes have to go on.

When Larry LeBlanc of Billboard sent us a letter written by Canadian music megaproducer Bob Ezrin, we were intrigued. With the possible exception of new superpower Steve Jobs, the music industry has been circling the drain in recent years, temporarily jamming the flow with the barely-explored careers of too many worthy artists. Bob Ezrin has been there and seen it all, and he’s got something to say about it.
Behind the console since the 1970s, Ezrin is a first-hand witness to the wild days of sex-drugs-rock-n’-roll through to the era of digital downloading. A graduate of Toronto’s Oakwood Collegiate, Bob Ezrin first achieved fame producing classic albums from Kiss, Alice Cooper, Peter Gabriel, and Pink Floyd (Ezrin is best-known for Pink Floyd’s magnum opus The Wall). He has been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame (2004), is a member of the CARAS Music Education program, and co-founded Music Rising—an initiative that is replacing musical instruments lost in Hurricane Katrina.
Ezrin also produced the 2004 Jay-Z documentary Fade To Black and these days, he’s helmed albums by 30 Seconds to Mars, The Darkness, Deftones, and Nine Inch Nails.
It is here where we catch up with Ezrin, who has penned a letter damning the lack of art and lust for commerce in today’s corporate music industry. The letter praises NIN’s Trent Reznor as the master of his own acclaim; a success nurtured seemingly in spite of the record labels. Ezrin remembers a time when the music business was built by “passionate amateurs who revered the artists, and who became their protectors, advocates and promoters.
“But now,” spits Ezrin, “the biggest part of the business is run by cold-hearted professionals whose reverence is for the bottom line, first and last.” (We can almost feel the planet’s orbit shift with simultaneous nodding by artists everywhere.)
Read on for more analysis and the full text of Bob Ezrin’s letter.

Like other “affiliate” labels, the Canadian mainstream music companies have also been plagued by a series of mergers and staff cutbacks over the last few years. Sony BMG’s February restructuring saw the ouster of president Lisa Zbitnew and a stable of key staff, and the company had already experienced the elimination of most of the Sony staff post-merger despite calling it an “equal represention” union. The Toronto-based affiliate also pruned-off domestic artists like Shawn Desman, Liam Titcomb and Jeremy Fisher (Fisher is now enjoying unexpected success thanks to being featured on YouTube’s front page, and Titcomb—son of musician Brent Titcomb—just finished recording a new album independently).
Just days earlier, EMI Music Canada also cut staff and liquidated half its roster in what some claim was anticipatory of a merger with the Warner Music Group (Warner has already made four failed bids for EMI). EMI is home to acts like Nickelback, Broken Social Scene, k-os and Feist.
Probably one of the most brilliant books on how it feels to be swept-up in the contemporary music business is Jen Trynin’s Everything I’ve Cracked Up To Be. Trynin describes being caught in a label bidding war, trying to avoid the Lilith Fair circuit, being juggled as a commodity, and being ruthlessly slashed from her label as quickly as she was courted, leaving her disenchanted and confused.
This is what the industry has become, and Ezrin doesn’t feel it can sustain itself as such. He calls for true artists to develop a determined, single-minded approach that doesn’t conform “at the expense of intuition.” He has lived through—and created much of—the Golden Age of rock music, yet remains cautiously optimistic that we can summon a new Golden Age of music, where artists are in control of their voices and value is placed on creativity.
Until then, we are reminded of the lyrics of “My Record Company,” by K’s Choice:
They like your band / They shake your hand
They smell like food that has gone bad
Today it’s you / Today will pass
I’m so sick of all this trash
The full text of Bob Ezrin’s letter follows:

Trent Reznor is a true visionary. He has broken and reinvented the rules of
engagement on every level, from recording to touring to interacting with his
fans.
He’s an intensely determined person—aware and on top of everything that happens in his name, from his music to his marketing. Trent controls all things Trent. Yes, he’s had help along the way, but he’s the captain of the Trent ship and his career is a product of his imagination and drive. He is not manufactured, homogenized, manipulated or packaged. He is Trent—and the rest of the folks get to react.
There’s a clue in here to how to run one’s life as an aspiring artist. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in situations where aspiring artists (as you know, I hate the designation but will grant it to a few sublimely talented folks like Trent) have created something and have had a vision that has not resonated with their “handlers” from management to producers, to the record company to even sometimes their lawyer—and have succumbed to the pressure to conform to the taste and judgment of these people at the expense of their own intuition—and have failed either immedately or ultimately because, in the end, they simply weren’t distinguished enough to connect to a large group of people in a lasting way. They may have produced a “hit song” but they typically did not create a career.
If Trent had done what everyone wanted him to, he would not have become a better selling act or bigger star as some of his advisors may have secretly thought. Instead, he would have disappeared long ago.
No one knows the heart or genius of true artists but the artists themselves. No one can predict them or imitate them or even steer them towards success. They are, by definition, single-minded people who cannot—and must not—see things the way the rest of us do. Once upon a time, we had a business built by passionate amateurs who revered the artists and who became their protectors, advocates and promoters. These folks didn’t presume to tell their artists what to do. Oh, every once in a while, they might beg and plead for more or different to help them to do their job, but they never imposed their creative will on the people they most admired in all the world.
And so we had a landscape of determined individualists who made very individual music—lots of it. We all know who they were—and some still are. But now the biggest part of the business is run by cold-hearted professionals whose reverence is for the bottom line first and last—and who think nothing of imposing their ideas and will on the people they sign. And most of those signings are not because they are enthralled by genius or art but because they smell “a hit” or know that someone else does and that they’d better get in there first.
Now, when I say stuff like this, all the record company people get pissed off at me and say I’m an asshole and that they are there because of their love for music, etc. And I don’t doubt that this is what propelled them at the start (though I suspect the notion of getting rich and hanging with rockstars may have had a bit to do with it too), but how many of the new leaders of our industry are able to resist the pressures of making their numbers in favor of supporting their artists? In fact, isn’t their primary job to “increase shareholder value”? So, they really can’t resist those pressures honestly and still be doing what they’re being paid to do. The problem with this is that it takes more than a [business financial] quarter to build something of value and real art cannot be scheduled or projected—only commodities can. But if we’re just a commodities business, then by definition we cannot build anything of real value—for the shareholders or the world.
So, what’s the biggest lesson here? It is that, if we can all agree to do as Ahmet [Ertegün, co-founder of Atlantic Records] recommended and surround ourselves with brilliant people and help those people to develop their craft, their own voice, and become artists making things of real value, we might see our way into the next golden age of popular music.
Thank God for Trent—and for all the others like him who will not compromise and will fight to realize their vision. In the end, they might save us all.
Bob

-Austinist reveled in the dumb antics of some U.T. law students and posted some great audio from former New Orleans natives who’ve decided to stay in Austin. But the best news for Austinist? They were voted Best Local Entertainment Web Site by the local Austin alt-weekly. Congrats, Austinist.
-DCist gloried in being told their musical tastes made them pretty, ran in drag, and played Shelby Foote in the great Kickball Wars.
-Chicagoist wondered about the new trend of gastropubs, unveiled the new non-sucky logo for their cities Olympic bid, and got into a fight then made up with Richard Marx. The Richard Marx. Does it get any awesomer than that? We think not.
-Phillyist was full of love as they loved some pictures of buildings lit up for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an interview with Dan Savage, and their Eagles.
-Torontoist chided a local TV reporter for ripping off their post about a breakfast sandwich, got to the bottom of a claim of racism from a popular local hip-hop artist, and redesigned some shwag for their transit system.
-Parisist had the scoop on stripping classes, ate some super yummy chocolate and macaroons and wore some jewelry made to look like chocolate (in French).
-SFist railed against the media as they discussed a news anchor who said stupid things and a Fox TV show host who called out a local columnist. They also watched an episode of When Debates Go Wrong.
-Gothamist was all over the plane that crashed into the Manhattan high-rise, defended a “Saturday Night Live” skit (somebody has to), showed the perils of what happens when you try and take pictures of a secret bar, and celebrated the not-firing of Joe Torre.
-LAist had politics on their mind as they had a photo essay on post-Katrina New Orleans, discussed animal lab testing at UCLA, and had a contributor elected councilmember of the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council. Who said blogging could never amount to anything?
-Shanghaiist uncovered the local lesbian scene, tried to uncover more of the big financial scandal by channeling Elmer Fudd, and can’t even begin to uncover anything about the Chinese government banning Jay-Z from performing in Shanghai.
Also, some lovely photos of the Summer Junction street fair, and why reporter Daniel Hernandez left the LA Times for the LA Weekly.
Gothamist goes through the Columbia tunnels, wonders whether you’d pay $5 billion for 10 East Village city blocks, and checks in on everyone’s favorite Whole Foods employee, Bill.

<img alt="jayz.jpg" src="http://www.torontoist.com/attachments/josh/jayz.jpg" width="238" height="350"align="right"hspace="5"/>Why is Jay Z’s grill all up in your grill, all up over our website? There’s no reasonable explanation. It’s true Mr Z is in Toronto this weekend for his MuchMusic gig tonight (with Kanye the Jesus freak), and at the cheese bar Montana’s on Saturday night (Montana’s is not actually a bar that serves cheese, rather a cheezey hangout for cheeseball people), but it’s not as if any Torontoist readers or cohorts will be able to see the man. Firstly, the Much gig will overblown with tweens, making it next to impossible to be near Queen. Nextly, Jay is <a href="http://www.ovationtickets.ca/gettickets/"target="new">charging $80 to get to his parking lot partay, which may be more fashion show than concert.
The best bet this weekend, in our opinions, is the <a href="http://www.iriemusicfestival.com/performers/performers.phtml"target="new">Irie Music Festival. Always interesting acts (Brinsly Ford, Morgan Heritage…and less so Third World), and all-weekend <a href="http://www.iriemusicfestival.com/viz-arts/viz-arts.phtml"target="new">art and book events make for one of <a href="http://www.detnews.com/2005/events/0507/22/F06-255478.htm"target="new">best Caribana attractions for past four years. And without Toots and the Maytalls this year, the crowds and vendor line-ups will hopefully become less intense. Read about the rest of the <a href="http://www.caribana.com/schedule.html"target="new">Caribana festival.

The guy is a lover, not a hater. Similarly, when Paige Six <a href="http://paigesix.blogspot.com/2005/02/so-sometimes-i-really-over.html"target="new">microwaves her underwear before going a formal, she isn’t bemoaning her own romantic luck as much as looking for dry under garments. Like cleanliness, she knows the value of a special V-day dinner far exceeds the general perception of Valentine’s as a ‘Hallmark Holiday.’
As we approach Monday, Torontoist columnists Paige and Age take a look at what is and isn’t good on Valentine’s Day. And, as we find out from the fab columnists, there’s more to V-day than wild sex and body fondue.

Paige
Generally, most people would consider assigning a single girl with
piece about the ins and outs of celebrating Valentine’s Day a huge
Don’t. But by pairing her up with an Adorable Sports Writer,
Torontoist’s matchmaking skills turn the assignment into an automatic
Do. After all, while other writers are left to blog this holiday
alone, he said/she said becomes the blogging equivalent of having a
fabulous date for February 14th.
<img alt="2005_02_10kissme.bmp" src="http://www.torontoist.com/archives/images/2005_02_10kissme.bmp" width="150" height="100"align="right"hspace="5" />The biggest Don’t of Valentine’s Day is over-complicating the holiday: Do not give elaborate presents. Spending stupid amounts of money is not romantic, just a desperate way to impress a girl. Do offer up personalized or self-made gifts: your girlfriend will know you took the time to figure out what would really make her smile.
Having Valentines ready to give out to your friends is an automatic Do
for the holiday. Remember how punching out pre-made Shoppers Drug-Mart
Valentine cards in elementary school was the only thing that February
14th used to mean to you? Bring back this playfulness and spend $2 on
some boxed-Valentines: the cheesy, ages-3-and-up kind printed with cartoons and silly messages offer a reminder of how the holiday should
be celebrated. But avoid turning the delivery of your Valentines into
a Don’t: make sure you keep the gushy messages and questioning of “what are your plaaaannns?” to a minimum. Valentines must be delivered with the appropriate level of light-hearted jadedness.<img alt="loverboy.jpg" src="http://www.torontoist.com/archives/images/loverboy.jpg" width="300" height="350"align="left"hspace="5" />
Don’t give carnations. Carnations are the pennies of flowers: no one uses them anymore and if you saw one lying around, it wouldn’t be worth it to stop and pick it up. Do be creative and unique with your flower selection. If you are going to give roses, learn that the different colours have different significance (yellow is friendship, for instance, while a thornless rose means ‘love at first sight’.)
Don’t be the creepy guy who offers self-serving advice to single girls as Valentine’s Day approaches. We see through your disguise, creepy friend, with ever sly questioning you make of a single girl’s plans. Telling us “you deserve to let a guy pamper you for the day!” is just as obnoxious as it is insulting to our chosen single status. Do, however, be the holiday hero of your group of single girlfriends by delivering a tiny V-day treat for each one. While a girl would feel uncomfortable if she was the only one shown your affection, giving flowers to many girls will cause them all to instantly compete with each other to show you just how much they appreciate the thought.
And Don’t let this be another Valentine’s Day where you pussy-out on
telling someone you like them. As cliché as secret admirers can seem,
the mystery and romance of having a Valentine’s crush is alluring to
any girl, regardless of her opinion on the holiday itself.
Adrian
With my newfound obsession for CSI reruns, I have recently spent more time watching Spike TV then I would prefer. For those who don’t know, Spike TV is the “First Official Network for Men,” with shows such as ‘WWE Raw,’ ‘Horsepower TV’, ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’ and ‘Trucks!’ commanding a large proportion of broadcast time.
<img alt="2005_02_10vday.gif" src="http://www.torontoist.com/archives/images/2005_02_10vday.gif" width="200" height="170"align="right"hspace="5" />Although generally quick to the remote during commercial breaks, there have been instances where I’ve zoned out and subjected myself to the “First Official Commercials for Men.” With Valentine’s Day falling this upcoming Monday, the recent advertisements have been exceptionally nauseating. I feel that Hulk Hogan must be the marketing director on some of these ads, leaving my intelligence continuously offended at how my demographic is treated. My personal favorite was for mail-order lingerie. Now I know this doesn’t seem too abnormal. Lingerie is a great gift to make her feel sexy, and that’s what Valentine’s is about. However it was the packaging of the advertisement that particularly sickened me. There were testimonials from both men and women alike, guaranteeing the endless rewards that will be bestowed on the man who takes advantage of this offer. It was almost saying that if your wife doesn’t put out, here’s your solution. Also, something just isn’t right about a man ordering lingerie while sitting in front of the TV, watching syndicated Star Trek in his underwear.
Then I realize these ads aren’t geared towards me. This Monday is an opportunity for long married couples, passed the fun years, to add some cheesy romance back to their marriage, and pretend if for just one day a year, that they are still hot for each other.
For those of us not living in a cave, we already know how we’re supposed to treat a woman. I’m not throwing down Valentine’s Day as a waste. No, definitely not. Every woman desires to feel special no matter what her age, or place in life. V-Day is the perfect opportunity to satisfy that desire. The problem however, is how we neglect the attention for the rest of the year, constantly putting rock-climbing or snowmobiling ahead of spending time with our girl. Valentine’s is a year-long commitment, so let’s treat it that way. This Monday, plan something out of love – not just to get laid. Then work at keeping it up until next February. Every day is the 14th.

When a cell phone goes off in the middle of a play, the logical person to hiss at is the miscreant who forgot to turn off his or her phone, of course. At the same time, however, we must recognize that to err is human. Even Torontoist has had something of ours beep at an inappropriate time once or twice. (It was a funeral. Yeeks.)
Less understandable are theatre companies that still do not have announcements at the beginning of shows reminding audience members to please turn of their cell phones and unwrap their candies. That’s just asking for it.
Last Friday’s opening night performance of Poochwater, Mike McPhaden’s resilient little comedy about a quirky war vet who forgets who he is, was interrupted by cell phone ringing not once, but twice. And the (well-reviewed!) show is barely over an hour.
The bulk of the blame here should go to Theatre Passe Muraille and rental company The Poochwater Collective for not
having a recorded announcement or a brief message delivered by one of the ushers before the show, especially considering that one of the strengths of Poochwater is that it attracts a lot of non-traditional theatregoers who may not be fully aware of theatre etiquette. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of Jay-Z ringtones, yo.
———-
Tonight is the 2005 Toronto Fringe lottery party, the event where the plays that will be appear in the theatre festival next summer are selected at random. Torontoist will be at the Tranzac club at 7 p.m. crossing her fingers that her one-woman show – Adventures of a Blog Girl in Search of God – gets picked and wishes best of luck to all local theatricals in the draw.
