Three puppet masters portray a day in the life of Auschwitz through a detailed miniature construction of the grounds and thousands of tiny handmade puppets.

When telling the story of the Holocaust, one effective way to overcome our sheer inability to comprehend the scope and scale of such atrocities is to zoom in on one or two stories: share one particular experience, in all its brutal specificity, and we have at least a small way into the event—the small details illuminate the larger whole.

One theatre company from the Netherlands, Hotel Modern, takes a related approach in KAMP (CAMP). The production depicts a typical day at the Auschwitz concentration camp, but instead of zooming in into a closeup, it shrinks everything down, literally, into miniature. It’s the accumulation of thousands of small details that has the impact in this case.

Bike Summit organizers say that drivers and cyclists are often the same people.

Eleanor McMahon thinks it’s time to change the conversation around cycling in Ontario.

McMahon is the founder of the Share the Road Cycling Coalition, who will be hosting the fifth annual Ontario Bike Summit this week in Toronto. She says that we need to stop talking about things like bike lanes and other bicycle infrastructure as a zero sum game between cars and bikes.

“We do polling, and our polling tells us that 89 per cent of Ontarians are both drivers and cyclists,” she says. “The notion that it’s cars versus bikes is overblown, and it’s really not working anymore. Deciding to change the conversation means going out of our way to poke holes in that idea and say from the get go ‘We don’t buy into that philosophy, and just because you say it, doesn’t make it true.’ ”

MUSIC: Five dollars, five nights, and five bands: that’s the basic info you need to know about the Drake’s annual music festival. Tonight is night two of the “What’s in the Box” extravaganza, and hitting the stage are Sepalcure—who recently released their debut album—as well as Nautiluss, Mymanhenri, Exeter, and Guerre. This is also the final night the show will be held at the Dakota Tavern as the combo of music and literature performances look to move to a bigger venue next year.
RALLY: On December 6, 1989, 14 women were murdered at l’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal because of their gender. To honour their memory and the memory of all women faced with violence, today is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Women Won’t Forget will be hosting a vigil to raise awareness of the issue at Philosopher’s Walk with speakers and musical performances.
FOOD: What’s better than having a nice cold pint of beer? Well, having some beer-friendly food to go along with it never hurts. The Canadian Beer News is launching the Canadian Beer News Dinner Series tonight, and the first event will feature organic beers from Beau’s All-Natural Brewing accompanied by a gourmet vegan meal by Chef Doug McNish.
MUSIC: There are lots of ways to get in the holiday spirit around the city, and tonight is no exception. Today in Toronto: musicians hold a Pie-Off, comedians take a stand against cancer, a screening of the best ads from around the world, and a mystery show with a mystery host.

MUSIC/FOOD: For too long local musicians have been judged exclusively on their performances, with their many other skills going unappreciated. Some time ago local singer/songwriter Catherine MacLellan decided to put a stop to this and instituted an annual Pie-Off, in which local performers could demonstrate their skills in the kitchen as well as on the stage. Musicians and music lovers alike are invited to bring in their pies, to be judged by a panel consisting of singer Treasa Levasseur, Caroline Brooks of The Good Lovelies, and Toronto Star columnist Greg Quill. The audience will also be free to partake of the competing pies, while listening to performances by Catherine and friends, including folk/country artist Jadea Kelly. Cameron House (408 Queen Street West), 6 p.m., PWYC.
COMEDY: Canadian comedy icon and Whose Line Is It Anyway? alum Colin Mochrie will be teaming up with a squad of local comics tonight to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. Mochrie and team will be taking over the Rivoli’s Sketch Comedy Lounge to promote their cause. Comedians on deck include Dan Redican, Lauren Ash, Fraser Young, and more. The Rivoli (334 Queen Street West), 8:30 p.m., PWYC.
MUSIC: For the past month, Jason Collett has been taking over the Dakota Tavern each Tuesday, for his Basement Revue Series. Collett’s lineup of talented friends have performed to sold-out crowds each night, but this evening he’ll be shaking things up a bit. Unable to take up the curatorial reigns himself, Collett will be transferring hosting duties to a special guest—who will also be a mystery until the moment the show starts! The lack of details has hardly dissuaded anyone, as tickets are sold out at all retail venues; if you can track one down, consider yourself pretty lucky. Dakota Tavern (249 Ossington Avenue), 9:30 p.m., $25 (SOLD OUT).

Today in Toronto: live opera from Italy, Brick Magazine visits bohemian Paris, and a super secret revue at the Dakota Tavern.

OPERA: Milan’s Teatro alla Scala may be one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world, but its location across the Atlantic makes it woefully inaccessible to Toronto’s opera lovers. Seeking to solve this conundrum, local film distribution boutique D Films will be screening a live performance of Wagner’s Die Walkure, the second installation in the epic Ring Cycle. Broadcast live from Italy in German with English subtitles, this opportunity is a bargain given that Scala tickets can go for hundreds of dollars—and that’s not even counting the airfare. AMC Yonge Dundas (10 Dundas Street East), 11 a.m., $18.
FUNDRAISER: Brick Magazine is tipping its hat to the Moulin Rouge with Kiki’s Paris, the journal’s first annual fundraiser. Themed after the parties of Montparnasse in 1920s Paris, the soiree will be hosted by Jian Ghomeshi and feature musical guest Jill Barber. In addition to a who’s who of the Toronto literary scene, the invitation boasts both dubious shenanigans and impolitic diversions in true bohemian style. Shake your tailfeathers and rendezvous with the green fairy* in support of one of Canada’s longest running and most respected literary journals. *Attendance of green fairy not confirmed. The Berkeley Church (315 Queen Street East), 8 p.m., $75.
REVUE: It’s December, and that means that Broken Social Scene’s Jason Collett is back to curate another round of the tantalizingly mysterious Basement Revue Series. For the fifth year running, this series will see Collett taking over the Dakota Tavern each Tuesday in December with a secret lineup of musicians, authors, poets, and other notables. The lineup isn’t announced until they take to the stage, with past events including everyone from rapper k-os to celebrity chef Michael P. Clive. With only seventy-five tickets available per night—twenty-five each at Rotate This, Soundscapes, and GalleryAC.com—space at the prestigious grab-bag show is at a premium. Dakota Tavern (249 Ossington Avenue), 8:30 p.m., $25.
