Three puppet masters portray a day in the life of Auschwitz through a detailed miniature construction of the grounds and thousands of tiny handmade puppets.

When telling the story of the Holocaust, one effective way to overcome our sheer inability to comprehend the scope and scale of such atrocities is to zoom in on one or two stories: share one particular experience, in all its brutal specificity, and we have at least a small way into the event—the small details illuminate the larger whole.

One theatre company from the Netherlands, Hotel Modern, takes a related approach in KAMP (CAMP). The production depicts a typical day at the Auschwitz concentration camp, but instead of zooming in into a closeup, it shrinks everything down, literally, into miniature. It’s the accumulation of thousands of small details that has the impact in this case.

Bike Summit organizers say that drivers and cyclists are often the same people.

Eleanor McMahon thinks it’s time to change the conversation around cycling in Ontario.

McMahon is the founder of the Share the Road Cycling Coalition, who will be hosting the fifth annual Ontario Bike Summit this week in Toronto. She says that we need to stop talking about things like bike lanes and other bicycle infrastructure as a zero sum game between cars and bikes.

“We do polling, and our polling tells us that 89 per cent of Ontarians are both drivers and cyclists,” she says. “The notion that it’s cars versus bikes is overblown, and it’s really not working anymore. Deciding to change the conversation means going out of our way to poke holes in that idea and say from the get go ‘We don’t buy into that philosophy, and just because you say it, doesn’t make it true.’ ”

The year is winding down and so is the music, which is kind of nice, actually, because there seem to be a lot of tours already gearing up for 2007. Hopefully Alexisonfire isn’t one of them…we have no idea how they can manage to go onstage and scream for 7 solid days (they have a few more shows this week). Insanity.
Best bets for this week include Royal Wood tonight at the Cameron House (around 10:30pm…still time to go!). He’s wrapping up his weekly Dead Daisy evenings for the year, so if you haven’t caught him yet, you really should. His voice and piano fill the front room of the Cameron so beautifully, it makes your heart swell (besides, he’s very pretty to look at). On Wednesday night, check out Lupe Fiasco with Shad K. and other guests at The Phoenix. If you’ve never heard Shad, the guy can freestyle like no other. Even if you’re not into the hip hop scene, Shad will blow you away. And Neverending White Lights have a 3-night stint at The Drake starting on Thursday. Best bang for your buck will be on Friday when Patrick Watson opens. Watson is an up-and-comer from Montreal and seems to be going places fast, so it may be best to catch him (solo) at this intimate venue.
Any other shows that we missed this week? Let us know in the comments.
As the weeks draw closer to the holidays, we’re seeing less and less shows listed — which really sucks, because one can only take so much Christmas music…and we’ve already heard enough of it to drive us insane. Yeah, yeah, bah humbug. That said, it’s quite possible we’ll be checking out Twisted Sister’s ‘A Twisted Christmas’ tomorrow. The vision of Dee Snider in full makeup and crazy hair, possibly wearing a Santa suit and singing ‘White Christmas’ is just too much to pass up.
Best bets for the week are all hometown kids, including Andre Ethier (of the now defunct Deadly Snakes), who will be performing his new solo work at Tranzac on Thursday, and The Meligrove Band at the Mod Club on Saturday, playing with the lovable Bicycles. We’re all about supporting the local talent, and the above acts are well-deserved of the attention.
Any other shows you know of that can spice up our list this week? Let us know in the comments.
Another busy week in the city. Ridiculously busy. Once again, there’s something decent to check out every night. We’ll be hitting The Decemberists, Imogen Heap, Shout Out Out Out Out (out out out), and possibly a few more. Perhaps even Skid Row (minus Bach). What?! As if you don’t miss those power ballads of the 80s!
Oh, and it looks like Justin Timberlake is bringing ‘sexy back’ to Toronto in January. The price? Up to $124. Even Bob Dylan isn’t charging that much. We think you’d be much better off bringing ‘sexy back’ by taking some pole dancing lessons. Everyone recovered from V-Fest yet? No? What’s wrong with you? Better take your vitamins and Red Bull then, because there’s a lot going on this week. Notably, Ms. Emily Haines will be playing four (that’s right, 4!) shows in a span of three days (incl. V-Fest), so if you think you’re tired…
If this isn’t enough music for one week and you know of other shows, as always, we want to hear about it in the comments.
A long time coming – more than seven months since the shows were announced and tickets went on sale – the sold-out crowd of 9,000 composed of equal parts present-day indie kids and aged hipsters was pretty damned anxious by the time their heroes finally took the stage just after 9.
What followed was an ultra-condensed career retrospective. Packing 29 songs into an hour-and-a-half set, barely pausing for breath or guitar changes, the Pixies barrelled from one classic song into the next. Performance-wise, they were amazingly tight, though no less than you’d expect from a band that’s been touring hard all over the world since their surprise reunion this past Spring – any reputation they may have gained for live inconsistency during their first go-around a decade ago has most definitely been shed. And while the show was somewhat short, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who could find fault with the set list or wasn’t completely satisfied. Almost every song anyone could hope for was there, practically bookended by a “Wave Of Mutilation” double-shot, both slow and fast versions. If there’s a minor complaint, it’s that the band seemed a little stiff and mechanical at the start of the show though they loosened up as things progressed, closing off the main set with a giddy reading of “Gigantic”. The encore was extra loose, with a goofy “La La Love You” followed by an extended noise-jam on “Vamos”. And full marks to whoever was handling sound, as getting as good a mix as they did in a giant airport hangar can’t be an easy task.
The Pixies play the second of the two shows tonight with tickets still available. Based on night one, night two is highly recommended.

But for everyone to start wearing flannel and be nostalgic for Mudhoney and Candlebox, those bands have to first stop touring. This week Toronto welcomes two such alt-rock holdovers in Frank Black and the Pixies and Slash in his G’n'R type-band Velvet Revolver.
Even though Black Francis is overweight and bald, and Slash can no longer speak in coherent sentences, both the Pixies show on Wednesday at Arrow Hall and the VR show tonight at ACC are expected to sell out.<img alt="2004_11_22frankblack.jpg" src="http://www.torontoist.com/archives/images/2004_11_22frankblack.jpg" width="150" height="250"align="right"hspace="5"/>
The Pixies are playing a reunion tour to support their greatest hits compilation, Wave of Mutilation. There are still tickets available for the second night of the two-night stop at the Mississauga venue, but first check out some expensive Mp3′s of live Pixies songs recorded earlier this tour before buying even more expensive tickets.
Slash, Duff, Matt Sorum and former Stone Temple Pilots drug addict Scott Weiland will play songs from their last album, Contraband, as well as classic G’n'R hits like “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn” and STP songs like “Daughter”. Slash will also be signing various G’n'R crap at the Edge 102 at 3:30 today.
