Wizard needs weekend plans, badly. Clever wizards know that the place to be this Friday and Saturday (June 27-28, 12–5 p.m.) is Evolution: 30 Years of Computer Games at InterAccess Electronic Media Arts Centre (9 Ossington Avenue). 20 PC games are on display and available for play on their original consoles, showing how gaming technology has evolved since 1978. The games and PCs are on loan from the Personal Computer Museum in Brantford, Ontario,... [continue]
It was announced earlier today that Michael Cera is in final negotiations to play Scott Pilgrim in the film adaptation of Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, the hit comic by ex-Torontonian Bryan Lee O'Malley. Not that anyone should be particularly surprised by the casting choice: Cera is pretty much Hollywood's go-to guy for likable underdog characters nowadays. The first volume of the Scott Pilgrim comics series has been in talks with Universal since 2005,... [continue]
Photo by exMOHAX Led by the group Anonymous and their ongoing campaign against the Church of Scientology, Project Chanology, protesters gathered outside the church's Toronto headquarters on Sunday to mark Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard's birthday. It was the second such worldwide protest in just over a month; the last protest—a surprisingly massive one—took place on February 10th. More photos from our Flickr Pool after the jump.... [continue]
Wild Toronto is a bi-weekly comic strip about the animals and plants that make a living in our city. Rosemary Mosco makes the comics, and would love to hear your suggestions (in the comments!) on wildlife to be profiled.... [continue]
We at Reel Toronto usually wait until we have the whole darned movie so we can delight you with screencaps galore. That said, a couple of new TO-shot movies have recently revealed themselves to the world in trailer form and we couldn't wait any longer to share.... [continue]
Toronto's extensive work on the silver screen reveals that, while we have the chameleonic ability to look like anywhere from New York City to Moscow, the disguise doesn't always hold up to scrutiny. Reel Toronto revels in digging up and displaying the films that attempt to mask, hide, or—in rare cases—proudly display our city. Before Chapelle became super-famous, he was just another bank tower janitor. Ah, the drug comedy. Do it right and you can... [continue]
Photo by Kamillionaire (Chicago). A spokesperson for the Church of Scientology labelled Sunday's protest outside its office at Yonge & St Mary—part of a worldwide series of protests—a "religious hate crime" and said that the "hate crimes of Anonymous should be condemned," as reported in Torontoist, CTV and the Toronto Sun, among others. That got us thinking. Accusing someone of a "hate crime" is pretty damning. Are the protestors guilty of it? Our preliminary... [continue]
If you passed the Church of Scientology’s Toronto chapter at Yonge & St. Mary on Sunday, you may have momentarily entertained a dark fantasy that Tom Cruise would emerge from the masked masses amid gales of manic laughter, igniting the dissenting throng with bolts of righteous lightning. Sadly, no such fun. Rumour has it that Mr. Cruise was under lockdown during Anonymous’ global day of action against L. Ron Hubbard’s brainchild. As the Toronto... [continue]
Chris Bosh is at it again. Although his innovative video pitch to fans wasn't enough to push him past Kevin Garnett and Lebron James for a starting spot in the NBA All-Star Game, it has made him a media player. Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix details how the video's popularity has raised Bosh's profile to new heights and how it prompted CB4 to start his own Chris Bosh TV channel on YouTube. To ring in... We love the TTC—we really do—but they make it hard to like them sometimes. The Commission does a good job behind the scenes keeping an enormous fleet of vehicles running, in reasonable repair, and reasonably on time, but where they really drop the ball is when it comes to the actual transit rider. Frustratingly, they have no shortage of passionate, inventive, and resourceful riders who seem to be happily at their disposal (gratis, even!),... [continue]
Torontoist has already done a pretty good job of letting you know how rad Posterchild is. In fact, the extent to which Torontoist writes about Posterchild could be seen as the textual equivalent of a marriage proposal. So without rehashing what has already been said about our favourite local street artist/public space crusader, just know that his radness is still on the upswing with new and improved versions of what he’s known best for:...... Photo by knittingskwerlgurl from Flickr. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa or Festivus, this is the time of year to give gifts and eat way too much food. Torontoist is no exception in enjoying these pastimes, and finds that giving a gift that is food is most often the best way to go. Giving a box of chocolates is a pretty sure way to make someone's day better, and is a firm favourite of...... [continue]
Are you getting geared up for the season finale of The Hills on Monday? If so, continue reading. If not, we don't need another lecture about how the show is quasi-scripted—tell it to your boring friends. The last few weeks have surprised loyal viewers with some major plot twists: Audrina finally dumped Justin Bobby, Lauren wants to make a boyfriend out of notorious man-whore Brody Jenner, Spencer's sister has turned cat-fighting into the official...... Torontoist is sad to report that the Annex's doc-driven underdog moviehouse, the Brunswick Theatre, is closing up shop (tonight!) before even being able to celebrate its first birthday. Among the reasons for the closure, as given by owners Scott Gilbert and Bre Walt, were the high overhead costs, a lack of private rentals in the coming months, and the recent postering crackdown that stuck them with a $1500 fine. Not fun times for a... [continue]
Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together, the fourth volume in the popular comic book series by Brian Lee O'Malley, hits stores across the city today. We feel confident in saying that there has never been a person in the history of time who hasn't liked this series. The fact that Scott Pilgrim is set entirely in Toronto only makes it more appealing: live vicariously through the characters as they eat dynamite rolls at New Generation... [continue]
Five days of Pan-Asian cinema in the city kicks off tomorrow night, as the Reel Asian International Film Festival celebrates its eleventh annual incarnation. Bloor Cinema will present the Opening Night Gala film, Finishing the Game, at 7 p.m., followed by a Q&A session with lead actor Roger Fan and producer Julie Asato. Added bonus: local comedy troupe Asiansploitation will perform beforehand on the red carpet. This year's festival is poised to impress. And...... [continue]
Reel Toronto is a look at Toronto's illustrious film history, during which our fair city has represented just about everywhere on earth. Yes, we're proud of our chameleonic ability to look like anywhere from New York City to Moscow––heck, Toronto even plays itself, every now and then. Even the legendary Elwood Blues cannot distract from the glaring sight of CBC Headquarters. There are a zillion reasons why Blues Brothers 2000 is not as good a...... [continue]
The above image viewed from afar might lead you to believe it is just a photo taken in a dimly-lit subway station. We were almost tricked, too! However, it is actually a screenshot from the newest Half-Life 2 mod by a team of five George Brown thesis students, which is called City 7: Toronto Conflict. The story goes something like this: The Combine, some kind of invading alien force, has turned the CN Tower... [continue]
Rosie DiManno sucks. Every day, poor Toronto Star readers are subjected to another over-the-top, awkwardly-written, occasionally-insulting column about the day's top depressing story from the purple-streaked purveyor of pulp. Some simply can't take it: according to a friend of Torontoist's who worked customer service for the paper, DiManno is the leading editorial cause of subscription cancellations. So, from this point on, Torontoist is featuring the very very worst of Rosie DiManno. No longer shall...... [continue]
November 14 to 18 marks the return of the Reel Asian International Film Festival. Last night, the Japan Foundation played host as filmmakers and media types gathered at a press conference to kick off the 11th annual incarnation of the fest. And with more than 70 independent works from all over the world, this year’s Reel Asian Festival will be worth cracking open that golden piggy bank for. Showcasing work from 13 different countries,... [continue]
