A morning crash has closed off a Gardiner exit ramp and yesterday's burst water main repairs continue to block motorists. Workers will be reconstructing Lake Shore Boulevard over the next 24 hours. Burst water mains will be around for awhile: Toronto has one of the highest failure rates for water mains in Canada. Toronto's backlog of repairs to the system will take about 8 years to flush out. The number of Asian tourists in Toronto... [continue]
David Miller was reelected Mayor of Toronto with almost 57 per cent of the vote. Voter turnout increased to 41.1 per cent. Full election results for all wards are available on the Toronto website. Miller used his acceptance speech to make his promises clear. Rather than use the new City of Toronto Act to add new taxes, Miller will be asking for 1 cent of the sales tax generated by Toronto from the provincial and... [continue]
You can play for Toronto FC next year. They are holding open tryouts at the end of December as long as you're willing to pony up $115. And if you don't make it, you also get a T-shirt and two free tickets to a game in their first season. "I'm sorry," apologized Jim Flaherty with nice, cheap words yesterday. He was apologizing to the Canadians who collectively lost $25 billion when he announced the surprise... [continue]

A coalition of Ontario municipalities created to fight Toronto's garbage may collapse, writes the London Free Press. Police have found one man dead and another wounded in an East York housing complex near O'Connor Drive and Eglinton East. Over at Flemingdon Park, a woman was shot and a security guard escaped injury when the shooter's gun jammed. The Toronto Star is gathering opinions on our public toilets. Peter Nadorvolgyi writes, "Some of the public washrooms... [continue]
Earlier this month, a few volunteers from Wireless Toronto got together at the LinuxCaffe. Some people have heard how Toronto Hydro is rolling out free wireless access in the city core for 6 months, but Wireless Toronto has been offering free hotspots since May 2005. Armed with a wireless laptop, Torontoist tried out the service.... [continue]
In case you're sick of paying for coffee to get your daily Internet fix, and can't wait for Toronto Hydro's system, the good folks over at Wireless Toronto have created a free WiFi access point in Yonge-Dundas Square. If that's not enough, they've also been hard at work bringing up other new locations. Some notable recent additions include Dufferin Grove and Kensington Market. These and all other locations offer free wireless access, paid for... [continue]
