Brooklyn indie buzz band Bishop Allen play Lee's Palace this Thursday night. Their music is infectiously catchy with great pop hooks. If you're looking for a frame of reference, one music blogger described their sound as "a mix of the brainy lyrics of The Talking Heads and the stripped-down guitar work of the Violent Femmes." Their records are on regular rotation on the iPods of several Torontoist staffers. We can't get enough of them.... [continue]

Toronto vegetarians are mourning the closure of East-end veggie haunt Narula's Chaat, Dosa & Thali House. Recently, the windows were papered up and the exterior now displays a large "for lease or rent" sign. The owners decided it was time to retire. We'll miss the all-vegetarian fare, the sunny patio, and Tuesdays, when everything on the menu was $2.25. (Seriously: Your entire meal was $2.25!) So, where to go now? It appears that veggie options... [continue]

Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve! Today we're trying something a little different with The Daily Photoist by featuring two images by different photographers. The two were added to our Flickr pool at roughtly the same time, and each takes a decidedly different approach to... [continue]

Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve! This photo reminds us of some ultra-realistic version of arcade hit "Breakout," which we can occasionally be found playing on our iPod on the streetcar. At first, we weren't sure exactly how we felt about this rather graphic image... [continue]

Torontoist is looking for some answers about last night's lunar eclipse. What eclipse, you say? If the photo above is any proof, last night, between 8:00 and 9:30, looking up to the sky in the West, you would have been greeted with the tiny sliver of moon smiling back at you. But a quick review of yesterday's and today's major media outlets reveals a big nada about the event. Indeed, even a search of... [continue]

Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve! This photo should be reprinted on the front of every newspaper in the country. There should be on 100-foot-high billboards, pamphlets, and t-shirts. It should be burned into our psyche as a galvanizing image in the fight against global... [continue]

Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve! What can we say? We're suckers for photographs of old signs, hand-painted lettering, and other typographic ephemera. But that's only part of the reason we were drawn to this photo by Torontoist Flickr pool member Cameron Laird. As Cameron... [continue]

Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve! What's up with Facebook? It seems like all of a sudden, it's morphed from being a community dominated by scholarly geeks to being the first word on everyone's lips. The overnight success of the networking community is humourously exemplified... [continue]

It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve! Feel like you're seeing double? We've chosen the same subject matter for today's Photoist as we did yesterday. It's an interesting study in contrast. Here, Torontoist Flickr pool member redmann (Ian A. Fraser) contributes his take on the ROM's... [continue]

It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve! This morning, Toronto photographer ekati (Kate) reminds us to look up with this beautiful image of the grand rotunda entrance ceiling at the ROM. This mosaic is truly a sight to behold, and here it's been captured in all... [continue]

Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve! Yesterday's snow storm caused havoc around the city, and made everyone's commute a dangerous, slow crawl. Either you were stuck in traffic, or like us, you had an hour-long walk home when no streetcars materialized. Today, things are not... [continue]

It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve! The Distillery District is a very popular destination for this city's photographers. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve! The appropriation of corporate logos appears to be a popular activity here in Toronto. It was only two days ago that we wrote about a rash of manipulations made to Microsoft Vista ads. Today, the famous Scotiabank world logo... [continue]

It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve! In case you hadn't noticed, there's a lot of winter outside your window. For some of us, this means hibernating inside and living vicariously through the internet. Torontoist Flickr group member syncros (Frank) decided instead to grab his camera... [continue]

Everything is Turning Japanese on February 17, 2007

It's tough to get excited about Kikkoman soy sauce bottles. They've been around since 1961, and you find them at every sushi dive in the city. But, at one time, they were the height of tableware innovation, and for that reason, they're included in a new show at the Design Exchange: Japanese Design Today 100. This exhibition, co-presented by the Japan Foundation, celebrates 100 everyday objects that each, in their own way, broke design... [continue]

While trolling Craigslist, we came across an intriguing apartment listing. Does your heart belong to the Annex -- home to sushiterias, frat houses, and highbrow cultural elite like Margaret Atwood and Adrienne Clarkson? Move to the neighbourhood, and you too could be closer to a Giller Prize win. And in the heart of this stylish mecca, we found this beautiful apartment. It's a ground-floor palace in an old heritage building, with two bedrooms, hardwood... [continue]

It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve! Some photographers view Photoshop manipulation -- especially when an image is as heavily distorted as the one above -- as a sort of cheating. (And there's certainly a lot of terrible Photoshop work out there to support this argument...... [continue]
