Snappy Answers runs every Saturday afternoon. Send your questions, be they tough or trivial, to snappyanswers@torontoist.com. Dear Snappy, Yesterday I saw three different girls in the exact same pair of gladiator sandals. Serious gladiator sandals, too: mid-calf height and made of some kind of snakeskin. I love them, but is too late to get my own? Should I just wait for the next major sandal trend (what is the next major sandal trend)? xoxo Adrienne... [continue]
Amid all the cute overloading our recent Internet history, all the LOLcatz and YouTube Charlies, we began to feel that something very important was missing. We just couldn't figure out what it was. Did we need more plush? More anime? More stuff on our cats? No, no, no. We needed... Cute. Boys! Yes, there is now a blog devoted exclusively to the pursuit of happy, daydreamy, or hipsterishly sullen boy faces. Honest, we don't... [continue]
Snappy Answers runs every Saturday afternoon. Send your questions, be they tough or trivial, to snappyanswers@torontoist.com. I need to quickly expand my awesome-t-shirt collection, but I work for about minimum wage. Where can I find delicious, locally designed and made tees (preferably eco-friendly) without spending my entire paycheque? Thanks! —Senning... [continue]
"What do you want to sell at my market?" demands a flustered, head-scarved Kealan Sullivan, 69 Vintage owner and entrepreneur extraordinaire. "You want to sell cupcakes? Sure. Homemade ice cream? Sure. Old records? Sure. Just not vintage clothes... because, you know, I do that already. Antique clothes? Sure." We don't actually want to sell anything at Queen West Market, which opens tomorrow, June 21, in the gallery formerly known as SPIN. (The gorgeous, dramatically... [continue]
If you're not getting tickets from the "Safe Cycling" cops this week, spend that extra cash and get them for this week/end's Bicycle Film Festival. Now in its eighth year, the round-the-world celebration of two-wheeled transport careens into Toronto this Wednesday night, June 18, through Saturday, June 21. First up, pedal over to Ourspace/Studio Gallery, 294 College Street, for Bikes Rock, a jams-packed opening bash with local indie-bop headliners—any guesses? Uh-huh—The Bicyles. Also on... [continue]
If you own an art gallery in Toronto, you should be sitting up and taking notes from our Facebook event calendar. These days, if you don't have a) a brand new website, b) a party to celebrate the launch of your new website, and c) a beer sponsor, you're just playing with crayons in the city's art scene. Simon Cole, however, has those ABCs down pat: the brand new gallery-owner made a full-colour splash... [continue]
Snappy Answers runs every Saturday afternoon. Send your questions, be they tough or trivial, to snappyanswers@torontoist.com. Do donairs exist in Toronto? Coming from Nova Scotia, I miss my donairs, and more importantly: donair sauce! I have yet been able to convince a Torontonian that donair sauce is delicious! I haven't seen any around the local supermarkets. Am I doomed to wait until my glorious return to NS to pick up some donair sauce? —Emma... [continue]
Luminato is upon us, fair citizens. If you're wondering what to do, what to see, or what's Luminato?, Torontoist is here to play festival guide. We've randomly drawn carefully chosen ten must-not-miss events: one for each day of the city's massive annual "arts and creativity" smorgasbord, which runs from June 6–15. Our staff's picks are after the jump.... [continue]
The best things in life, everyone knows, aren't free. The best things in life are things other people have to pay for, and you get for free. Like the 1,000 bottles of beer at the latest of Toronto's legendary Vice parties, if you were early or lucky or special enough to get into the Deleon White Gallery on Friday night. Or, say, the three hundred Microsoft Zunes given to young "influencers" (bloggers, DJs, other... [continue]
Snappy Answers runs every Saturday afternoon. Send your questions, be they tough or trivial, to snappyanswers@torontoist.com. So, beards. Is there some sort of general Toronto women consensus on whether they are appealing or appalling? Is the fact that I have a beard of a length that is less two-day stubble and more, say, dude from Band of Horses, ruining my chances of attracting a mate? Do I even want to be with someone who can't... [continue]
On a clear Tuesday evening, a twenty-ish, canvas-shod scruffster shuffled east from Bathurst onto Wellington and, looking either very lost or very uncomfortable, turned hesitantly into the gated patio of Marben Restaurant. He exchanged a few words with a sleek, formidably stiletto'd woman, and, miraculously, slipped inside. Sneakers allowed at this swankest of James Chatto-approved eateries? When it's an Omy Gallery party, well, yeah.... [continue]
Photo by Stephanie Fysh from the Torontoist Flickr Pool. All along Queen Street West, consciously kitschy cuckoo clocks are ticking down to tomorrow's grand opening of Toronto's sophomore Urban Outfitters. Just west of Spadina, but still east of cool, the kaleidoscopic shop takes up residence on the far end of what is fast becoming the strip mall stretch of Queen. Little problem: that block, and the accompanying teenage wasteland demographic, has been ruled by... [continue]
William Morassutti and the TORO girls at his Brant House (yes, Brant House) launch party. A picture is worth 1000 words, or roughly twice as long as the average article in the new TORO "Magazine." It took us two mornings to recover from the oceans of alcohol imbibed at the TORO online launch party on Wednesday, peel our champagne goggles from our mascara-encrusted eyes, and take a deep breath and a second look at... Snappy Answers runs every Saturday afternoon. Send your questions, be they tough or trivial, to snappyanswers@torontoist.com. So I've been casual friends with this guy, let's call him Smith, for about seven years. We went to the same high school, and went to University together, and now, lo and behold, we work together. Thing is, I notice now that he's acting... different at work. The cocky womanizer I know is suddenly talking a lot about fashion,... [continue]
Spotted on Craigslist this week: a casting call for Keys to the VIP, because dreams do come true. Do you think you have what it takes to be a part of the first professional league for players?? Men between 19-30 years old *must be at least 19 because taping takes place in a club -outgoing, confident, comfortable talking to women -not married or in a serious relationship -looking for guys to meet girls, are creative... Torontoist presents an imagined inside look at the creative process behind the AGO's shiny new logo, above. Designer: Bruce Mau Client: Art Gallery of Ontario Due: May 15, 2008 Creative Brief: Design a "distinctive new logo that will represent the Gallery well beyond its Fall 2008 opening." Logo should capture "both the stability of the century-old institution and the forward-looking energy of the new Gallery." (If that proves too challenging, refer to graphic design... [continue]
Snappy Answers runs every Saturday afternoon. Send your questions, be they tough or trivial, to snappyanswers@torontoist.com. Ok seriously. As an avid reader of them, I must know: why won't any of the plethora of adorable Toronto women that I see in the city Missed Connections me? It's all that I, the helpless romantic Craigslist addict, want out of life (give or take a few other minor things). I dress fine, I make eye contact but... [continue]
Photo of NinjaX, by NinjaX, courtesy of NinjaX. Four days ago, a kid who calls himself NinjaX (real name? We don't care) set out to face hunger, "brutal weathers" (that mid-May zephyr can be vicious!), and "the risk of getting robbed/stabbed/raped/killed" (in that order, presumably). What does that spell? Homelessness! Or rather, NinjaX's Official Seven Day Homeless Adventure: "Stay tuned for lols." With only $20 to spend on survival—kind of commendable, actually, considering that's... [continue]

Torontoist had a major hard-on for Toro Magazine during its four-year run as Canada's handsomest glossy. So when the thinking lad's mag shrivelled up back in spring 2007 (proving, sadly, that subscribers and awards mean little without advertisers and government funding), its sudden absence from newsstands left us frustrated and unfulfilled. Investigative reporting, social commentary, witty essays, and tits? We couldn't find all this between the sheets of any other rag in the country.... [continue]
