The S Festival: Saris, Samosas, and South Asia

Maybe all these cultural festivals in Toronto aren’t your cup of tea, but with the summer season nearing a close the best may very well have been saved for last. The Festival of South Asia held on Gerrard Street East (between Greenwood and Coxwell Avenue) starts this Saturday at 2 p.m. and continues through to Sunday. With a short list of sponsors and a couple of them companies that actually sell Indian products, this experience already seems more authentic than Taste of the Danforth.
There is only one stage with entertainment and each act has a South Asian influence. Dance and music take up most of the slots with a fashion show on Saturday filling in the remainder. More entertainment will be provided for children and the ever-popular Henna artists will likely be ready to draw their beautifully detailed work all over your hands for a small fee.
Food tends to be one of the highlights of these cultural events and seventeen restaurants are listed as offering some type of tasty fare. Lahore Paan Centre provides the widest breadth of options with nearly half of them as drinks. If you ended up like we did and missed out on the dosa at the Street Treats Festival, grab one from Udupi Palace as they’re the only restaurant listing it on their street food menu.
Not enough enticement? Jet Airways, one of the sponsors, will be holding a contest to win two tickets to India. If you don’t glean enough knowledge about South Asia from the festival, a trip to India will certainly do the trick.

Taste of the Danforth

With over one million attendees in previous years, there was no chance that Torontoist would have forgotten about Taste of the Danforth. One of the most popular cultural events in Toronto begins tonight at 6 p.m. on Danforth Avenue between Chester and Jones Avenue and continues throughout the weekend to make sure you get your fill of souvlaki.
To help you plan out your trip, Taste of the Danforth has put together a handy Google map of participating restaurants and stores (listed in no particular order), with locations of subway stops and Green P parking optionally shown.
The schedule is packed with bits of entertainment every twenty minutes, but you’ll notice a lot of the performers are repeats with only one of the five main stages/zones dedicated to Hellenic-based entertainment. And while Taste of the Danforth is now advertising themselves as a multicultural event with Greek roots, we’re still not quite sure how a show put on by a pole dancing studio at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday fits in.

The focus on the cyclist drew us to this photo by Jay Morrison. We really like the snippet of city life that it offers via such a narrow sight, and our curiousity is piqued by what may lie behind the enclosing dark spaces.

Soft images of fluttering skirts lends a whimsical feel to this peaceful photograph by Torontogal Photos. Taken during an attempt to reach “Perfect”, the Dervish practice is not unlike many other meditative practices used in other religions to achieve sentience.

After running around a city in sweltering heat, the intense colours inking the sky during a sunset can bring a sensation of calm. In this photo by Metrix X, the horizon melds into the intense orange and gives the impression of a single surface. As beautiful and enhanced as the colour saturation may be, this is a reminder that beautiful skies are often the work of our smog.

An astute sense of composition is often used in room929‘s minimalist and abstract photos to greatly enhance their impact. The CN Tower needle is cut across by electrical wires at nearly all the gradations in this photo to offer a somewhat symmetric beauty. But there is a nagging sense of alternative intent in the image that is cleverly revealed through its name.
Flickr allows a photographer to communicate messages to their account viewers via several functions. Information can often be passed through notes that are shown via a mouse over on a particular area of an image. With the electrical wires resembling music staff lines, room929 inserted the “5-note melody played by the spaceship in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Click on the image above to view the notes. Not the only time he’s played with Flickr settings, his enamoured diptych required quite a bit of thought and does not appear properly some of the time.
