Duly Quoted: Gavin Stark, on His Mom Being Struck and Killed By a Driver

What a pedestrian fatality means to a 10-year-old.

“It’s not fair at all because all she was doing was standing on the sidewalk.”

—Ten-year-old Gavin Stark writes about his mom, Erica. She was killed in 2014 when a driver’s vehicle jumped the curb and struck her while she was training a service dog in Scarborough. Driver Elizabeth Taylor was found guilty of careless driving. She was assessed a $1,000 fine, six months probation, and a one month driving ban. Toronto could be headed for its highest pedestrian fatality total in 25 years. Yesterday, over 20 pedestrians were hit by vehicles, including an 87-year-old who died.
